There is a draft of a new wiki article on using some types of fields here.

It is tentatively titled "Using Templates Without Data Sources" but I'm not sure that this is the best title.

I'm open to other suggestions before I move it from my "in progress" page to it's "final" location.

Thanks,

Lorinda

I think the title needs to include "Fields" somehow, but I don't know how Sad

Good Article Lorinda,

When I read the article and the article seems to be about Fields, Fields, and Fields!
A better title might be: "Using Fields in Templates, without Data Sources"

"without Data Sources" is a minor point, but important.

Gosh, I love these GREAT new articles. I sometimes wonder the the Mystic Wiki Elves ... are on/taking? Rolling Eyes

Ah you both caught a mistake in my title! It was supposed to be "Using Fields without Data Sources."

I obviously typed it wrong when I started working on the article, and I didn't notice last night when I copied the title over to my post. The technique isn't restricted to Templates.

I knew there was a reason I decided to work on it on my "in progress" page rather than give it a "permanent" title first!

I opted for "Using Fields Without Data Sources" and it's now in the list of Writer specific tips. (I don't know if it works in any of the other modules)

Lorinda,

I just translated your article (beautiful Smile ) and I've two questions:

1) In the User Fields section, I presume that a Value has to be entered and not only a Name?

2) Sorry, I don't understand "plain" variable, therefore I don't know how I can translate: I used "simple", but I'm not sure that that makes sense?

Quick work, Jacqueline!

It is possible, but not necessary to enter a value for the fields when creating the document. If one is creating a template with input fields, the values would normally be left blank originally. I have added an (optional) step to the User Fields section to address this.

By "plain" variable field I mean the field created when the variable was created (unlike User fields, you have to actually insert the variable in order to have it show up in the Input fields list). But I reworded that sentence, too, since I wasn't clear.
