PostPosted: Sat Aug 25, 2007 9:36 am    Post subject: RetroOffice X11 warning translation request

I am working on the RetroOffice pages. Unfortunately, I had to add some new text in several places. Although I won't list all of them here as I still have some changes to make, there are a few key paragraphs that I think users will need to read to avoid downloading RetroOffice when they really are looking for a native application like NeoOffice. If anyone can translate these paragraphs, that would be much appreciated:

Code:
[b]Important[/b]: [b]If you are not familiar with configuring and using an X11 server on your Mac OS X machine[/b], we can almost guarantee that you will not find an X11 application like RetroOffice easy or intuitive to use and [b]we strongly recommend that you download NeoOffice, our native Mac OS X application instead[/b].

Code:
Generally, most users use NeoOffice, our native Mac OS X application, instead of RetroOffice. Since RetroOffice is an X11 application, it is only used by a small number of users such as:
    * NeoOffice testers and support volunteers that use it for troubleshooting purposes
    * Mac OS X users that prefer using an X11 application instead of a native Mac OS X application

Thanks,

Patrick

German:
Code:

In French, if French speakers agree:
Code:
[b]Important[/b]: [b]Si vous n'êtes pas habitués à configurer et utiliser un serveur X11 sur votre ordinateur sous Mac OS X[/b], nous pouvons être presque certains  que l'utilisation d'une application X11 comme RetroOffice ne vous paraîtra ni facile ni intuitive et [b] nous vous recommandons instamment de télécharger de préférence NeoOffice, notre application native Mac OS X[/b];

Code:

Jacqueline's translation is good. I have three suggestions though:

- I suggest "vous n'êtes pas habitué" (without s - forme de politesse au lieu du pluriel);

- I would prefer "sommes" to "pouvons êtres";

- "de préférence" doesn't feel right, I suggest using "à la place" instead.

Agree/disagree?

1) I agree (oops, spelling mistake!)
2) I agree
3) Maybe, but "à la place" before or after "NeoOffice"?

Jacqueline, what about:
Code:

OK. I repost both translations:

Code:

and
Code:

FYI. I have posted the French translations. However, I made one small change. I added "de NeoOffice" in the first list item in the second paragraph:

Code:

NeoOffice is a link in the original English text and and I didn't want to lose that.

Let me know if my syntax is incorrect (my Spanish lessons make me think that "Les testeurs de NeoOffice et les bénévoles de NeoOffice" is correct but I wasn't sure).

Seems OK to me. But you should avoid using "de NeoOffice" twice (as in "Les testeurs de NeoOffice et les bénévoles de NeoOffice")…

'serveur X11' is strange for me, 'environement X11' is used on French MacUser forums that I visit

It's OK for me too.

As you like, but "environnement" (two "n") Wink

FYI. I used "server" instead of "environment" mostly because I wanted to try and separate out the hard-core X11 users from those who really are looking for a native Mac OS X application. The idea is that if the term "X11 server" is confusing, then RetroOffice is most likely not what you want.

IMHO, a lot of Mac sites have been using "X11 environment" in what appears to me to be an attempt to make X11 not seem unapproachable. In contrast, since NeoOffice exists, I really don't want to encourage use of RetroOffice unless you are a user that is savvy enough to set your DISPLAY environment variable, etc.

OK Patrick. Thus it would be better to leave "serveur" in the French version.
