PostPosted: Wed Aug 29, 2007 7:38 pm    Post subject: Installation fails with errors at the beginning ...

I have been using versions of NeoOfficeJ for a while. I currently have v2.1 installled. My Mac is a Yikes G4 with 1 GB RAM, many Gigs of hard disk space free. I have always been able to install earlier versions without problem and patch installations were problem free.

I have read the NeoWiki instructions concerning "Installation fails with (generic) error message". My Mac OS X has only English in the Languages pane of the International Preference Pane.

Yet just as the actual installation begins, the install quits with a "There were errors installing the software" message. That's it.

I have downloaded 4-5 times in different ways .. different servers ... etc.

I can capture a crash log if that is of help ...

One further point, I installed another piece of software this evening to confirm that the Installer application didn't have a problem. That was a success.

Any ideas. I am open to filing a bug report, but thought to ask questions first.

Thanks for any feedback ...

Dale

I'm running NeoOffice 2.2.1, using a PPC G4; OS X 10.4.10; Java 1.5.0_07

More reading on the Neowiki: Troubleshooting tips - you said that an installer program says the application installed correctly: so perhaps the next step is to disable any haxies you may have, if any, and see if you have any improvement in launching the program.

You can also try creating a new user account and see if you can launch NeoOffice from the new account.

I've moved this topic to the Support forum, seems a more relevant place for it.

Correction, the installer fails at the very beginning of the progress thermometer. There is no installation ... not even any file remnant.

The people having problems with Haxies have more or less successfully completed installation ... I never really get started before failure. I hope sometime to get to the point where there is something to try launching.

I don't have any Haxies installed any more ... simple is better ... Wink)

You said you tried several ways - so you may have already tried to use "curl"

Here is a link on the Neowiki for: Using curl to download NeoOffice

Can you clarify if you get the .dmg file; but when you click to start the installation that that is where the failure occurs? Or did you not even get the .dmg file?

Different mirrors download at a pace of ~10-20 mins. (but two of them are slow and take an hour+; did you get the long download time?)

what type of internet connection do you have?

Before you go downloading again, please do verify for us where the error occurs:

1) Is it when opening the disk image (i.e., you never get to see the window with the orange package file (NeoOffice.pkg)

2) Is it occurring sometime after you double-click on the NeoOffice.pkg (Installer.app should open and will present you with a series of screens)?

If it's (1), then you should redownload. Otherwise, your download is fine.

If it's (2), can you tell us which screen in the Installer is the last that works. Also, if you go to the Installer's File menu and choose "Show Log", do you see any errors (it should default to "Show Errors Only", but we might later ask for information from when "Show Everything" is selected)?

My error is a type 2 error. The disk image opens OK.

The installer package opens the Installer and all screens up to the screen with the "Install" button work. So does the Install button ... it brings up the password dialog and then the progress thermometer window and the failure occurs just as the blue is beginning to show.

I have captured the error shown with "Show Errors Only" set in the Installer Log window. Only one error shows: failure to "run preflight script for NeoOffice".

Thanks for the assist ...

Dale

Unfortunately, we really need to see what the preflight script is executing to determine what the problem is.

I wrote the preflight script to log all commands that are executed so we need to see the lengthy output that selecting "Show Everything" shows. Can you rerun and paste that? Or, at least paste the last 50 lines if there is more data than that.

I have re-run the installation attempt a couple times. Strangely, the Install Log window shows exactly the same output as posted above regardless of which option I pick in the popup list (Errors Only, Errors and Progress, Everything). I don't know what's going on there.

However, there is CrashReporter Log and I have captured the last run from that. I'm hoping it will paste in below. Let's see and thanks ...

I have seen oddities like this before can you try this and lets know

Check the HD for errors via disk utility?

HD errors can cause strange problems as I have had many over time.

Also try making a new user account and try installing Neo Office into it to see if makes any difference.

If errors on the HD are found you will need to boot from the install dvd and run disk utility from it.

Also as a thing that has also help me and many other people try re-installing the 10.4.10 combo updater. The combo updaters are much better and fix problems.

You may if you use this option have to re-run other updates as it may overwrite them.

Cool

I have re-run the installation attempt a couple times. Strangely, the Install Log window shows exactly the same output as posted above regardless of which option I pick in the popup list (Errors Only, Errors and Progress, Everything). I don't know what's going on there.

However, there is CrashReporter Log and I have captured the last run from that. I'm hoping it will paste in below. Let's see and thanks ...

I can see why you get the same output regardless of which option you select: Apple's Mac OS X installer code is crashing before it runs our preflight script. What's really scary is that the installer is crashing in a very simple operation: executing a shell script.

Since the Mac OS X installer code is acting in a very unstable manner, rob_06's theory that there is something corrupted in your Mac OS X installation is a pretty good one. So follow rob_06's advice and, using the Disk Utility application, select your main volume and do the following:

1. Press the "Repair Permissions" button
2. After that is done, press the "Verify Disk" button

If in step 2 the verification fails for any reason, you need to press the "Repair Disk" button. However, since that button will be disabled, you will need to reboot from your Mac OS X installation disk. The Mac OS X installer will run when you do this but don't be alarmed by this. Just proceed through the installer until you see a regular Mac OS X menubar. When you see that, select the Disk Utility menu item and that will run Disk Utility where "Repair Disk" will be enabled. After you finish with Disk Utility, quit it, cancel the Mac OS X installer, and reboot from your main volume.

I've taken the suggestions. Both disk verified OK both before and after doing a repair permissions. Only one file had permissions changed.

I did a re-install of the 10.4.10 Combo Update. There were no other updates to be repeated after that.

Then I ran the NeoOffice 2.2.1 installer successfully ... YAY !!!!!

Something was wrong with the installer. I hope the build environment I have set up using Fink for Mozilla doesn't have anything to do with it. I'm keeping fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help everyone.
