Thanks for that; the link from the physics version of TOE to the philosophical one was of the most use to me. This is because the subject matter of physics cannot and does not and cannot explain life, only static repeating processes in the universe. Life is an evolving phenomenon, and in terms of complexity (not 'progress') human consciousness is the ultimate expression at this time. Consciousness bedevils even the quantum mechanics people, who can actually observe its effects, but cannot otherwise account for it. It did stimulate Ilya Prigogine to use his formidable analytic powers and give us Complex Adaptive Systems theory, but in the end he has even been reduced to near mysticism.
Computing is a particularly interesting interface between the living world and the physics world. One of the hidden results is that people like Steven Pinker take early work in AI (Rumelhart et. al.) and try to apply it to the biology of consciousness, e.g. the notion of various 'modules', a doomed approach IMHO.l

You might want to try the test patch in bug 2588 and see if you notice any performance improvements. I found that for only a very small increase in CPU usage, I was able to reduce the sample macro run time from by about 95%.
