Hi, and welcome to OOo!
The warning about OOo being for advanced X11 users only is perhaps a little too frightening But you do need to appreciate that OOo is not a standard OSX application. It looks more like a Win95 app than anything else, and displays its windows using the unix X11 graphics system. Also, because OOo is free, there is no support as such - just other users who may be able to answer your questions, and our overworked volunteer programmers.
However, unless you plan to learn about X11/unix, or run other X11 apps, you would probably be better off using NeoOffice/J instead. Despite the warning that it is unfinished, it is now entirely usable. The only major thing that doesn't work is drag and drop editing.
