I just received this news:
e.b. stops his participation in OOo project. No explanation, no reason.

Maybe he's mad at those guys Sun tasked to work on the Mac port?
Bizarre news, indeed.

Of course, I don't know the hidden side of the affair. Looks like his decision was not that unexpected. But the announcement is a bit sudden.
What will happen to the native version?

Simple. Sun's engineers will work on it. IMHO, they are the only engineers that have been making any significant progress in the core code in the last few months and I expect that Sun's engineers will continue to work on the native port until they have something that is good enough for Sun's salesforce or management or whomever original convinced Sun to assign engineers to the project.

Pray tell, where did you get that news? It isn't on the Dev or Mac porting lists.. |

Vraiment..
I did little but clash with him, so I wil not be a hypocrite and say I am sad to see him go. Even so, I am wondering what happened and if this will change anything about the direction of the Mac port.
Best wishes,

I got e.b.'s announcement on a French mailing list.
From e.b. himself.
hi_RAM gave the info to get the archive of the list.
If I had not been sure of the authenticity of the news, I would not have announced it here.

Probably, Smokey is right:
Quote: | Maybe he's mad at those guys Sun tasked to work on the Mac port?
|
And probably he did not want to share the direction of the Mac port?
His decision was taken before Apple Expo (in Paris), so it was not an unexpected one, for those who know him.

Thanks for the link, doctype.
As I read it, it boils down to two issues:
-personality conflicts within the project; he feels others have worked against him and/or have taken inappropriate credit/glory for things
-the mounting expenses he has had to cover himself, particularly at recent conferences.
There's also something about an award and lack of recogntion of (certain members of?) the French projet. I didn't entirely understand that part.

OK. I try to briefly translate. It's very, very long And Lorinda has very well summarized the text.
e.b. doesn't like the way Sophie Gautier (chief of the French OOo project) presents the things.
No problem with Laurent (Godard?).
Mox Soini showed the way. e.b. implicates Pavel Janik's behavior.
But the problem is that he has to pay many euros for several trips: Apple Expo in Paris, FOSDEM in Brussels. And when he wanted to get "his money back", the answer was "NO".
His exposition of those accounts is quite long.
He understood that:
1) he will never get anything more, despite all the work he could do.
2) he is duped
3) it's too much, and it's time to stop
4) it's really S. Gautier who is obstructive
S. G. told him that if he stopped, people will say that he is not "reliable". He was very hurted.
He can add many other reasons to his choice
The Fr project attaches no importance and no value to the Mac port.
The OOo communauty is bad defended because to much people are thinking only about their personal power. The communication is poor.
He thanks Sun's engineers for the work they did and who are fantastic.

I hope jakeOSX is following closely for the next installment of his play, because this latest episode is tragic (so much dedication with so much frustration), ironic (because dissatisfaction with OOo.org structures were part of the motives for the NeoOffice project, a project which Eric fought against fiercely) and childish ("I hate you because you don't give me any love and respect and I will never talk to you (Please love me, love me, love ME!)"). |
