TPT
I do have a question about this phrase:
Quote: | To display the product of these individal values by 5 |
It doesn't sound right to my ear (specifically "the product of x by 5"). But I'm not sure how to change it, and I have a feeling that it may be correct "mathematical speak."
So I have left it.
I did start changing where phrases like "in cell B1" appeared in the directions, putting it before the formula rather than after, but I didn't do that consistently. I may go back and make that all consistent later.

Thanks a lot Lorinda.
In maths, "product" is the result of the multiplication of two (or more) factors. Of course, I'm not sure that my wording is correct In this case, it's the result of the multiplication by 5 of the numbers contained in the range which is displayed. I don't see another way to say that?
Sorry for the bad words order (always the same mistakes )

What about:
To display the product of each value in the range B1:B20 by 5
Edit: or maybe
To display the product of each value by 5 in the range B1:B20

Thanks for the suggestions, Samwise.
For me, the second one sounds better. Because the values which are multiplied by 5 are in the range A1:A20, the results of the multiplication are in B1:B20.
I replace my wording with yours.

Glad I could help.
BTW, you're right; my first suggestion should have read:
To display the product of each value in the range A1:A20 by 5
but I didn't read the article carefully enough |

I agree that Samwise's suggestion sounds better. I was familiar with the term "product", but using the preposition "by" with it is what sounded odd to me.
I think this is because "by" is most frequently used in connection with a verb, not a noun. (e.g. Multiply cell A1 by cell B2). But since I can't come up with a different way to do it using the noun "product," I'm guessing this use of "by" is correct for mathematical contexts. When it comes to mathematically correct syntax and vocabulary, Jacqueline's English is better than mine.

In cases where I've heard "product" used, it's typically been in a "product - of - and" construction. I don't know if that's correct, but to my ear it sounds better than "by."
I'm not sure it applies very well to our particular use here, either
To display the product of 5 and each value in the range A1:A20

Interesting, interesting.
I dived in my English mathematical books. I never sufficiently pay attention to the prepositions, conjunctions, etc. I'm not absolutely sure, but I guess that "and" is better than "by", which sounds terribly French. I'll change "by" for "and" in the article.
Thanks all of you for helping.

I've made a small edit to the page, replacing "of this range in the range B1:B20" with "of this range in cells B1:B20". Not perfect, but sounds better (IMHO). |

OK. Thanks, I agree with you. It's better without such a repetition
