|
Dual 2.3GHz G5 running OS X 10.4.10 and NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 2.
I'm having a problem similar to that reported by others before, but the fixes I've read in other threads don't work.
Problem: For just NeoOffice, not other apps, I get the "Couldn't contact spell checker" dialogue constantly. It can be dismissed by clicking "OK," sometimes by simply hitting the space bar, and sometimes not at all after the SPOD appears (necessitating a force quit).
I've deleted every SpellCatcher file I can find, although I haven't used SpellCatcher for years. I deleted the NeoOffice preferences (I did have a pref file from an earlier version).
I'm stuck and do NOT want to have to use any Microsh*t products. Please help. |

Have you rebooted since you deleted all of the SpellCatcher X files? Rebooting is necessary as the problem will persist until you reboot even if you have deleted all of the files. If you already did a reboot, have you checked for any CocoASpell files?

I HAVE rebooted (many times).
cocoAspell locations:
/volumes/mhdg5/applications/cocoAspell/cocoAspell.mpkg
/volumes/mhdg5/library/application support/cocaAspell(folder, empty)
/volumes/mhdg5/Preference Panes/Spelling.prefPane/Contents/Resources/cocoAspell.service
~/library/services/cocoAspell.service
I also have another volume with cocoAspell on it, but this is NOT the startup volume.
Thanks so much for your help! |

Does deleting the ~/Library/Services/cocoAspell.service file and rebooting fix things?

No. I deleted (did not empty trash) and then rebooted. Problem remains. |

To make sure it's not something more fundamental, can you try using NeoOffice in a different user account and see if the error persists?

I created a new user, opened the original NeoOffice app, and do NOT see the problem. Spelling errors are highlighted (underlined) and the contextual menu works fine (replacements, learn, ignore, etc).
What now? (and thanks!) |

You might want to try emptying your trash and rebooting as maybe the system still has a handle to the file that is in the trash.

Hmmm. Since you are getting these errors, we know that something from SpellCatcherX or cocoaASpell is still registered itself as a Mac OS X spellchecker extension for your user.
So, the trick now is to find what file is triggering this. Is it possible to reboot and, before you use any applications, unmount your "mhdg5" volume? After you do this, try NeoOffice. This will tell us whether or not the files on that volume are the cause.

NeoOffice resides on mhdg5 (not the boot volume). Can I boot with apps off, unmount mhdg5, and still activate an app from the unmounted volume? |

I assumed that NeoOffice was on your boot volume so unmounting your mhdg5 volume won't allow NeoOffice to run. In your case, you would have to copy NeoOffice to your boot volume and then unmount mhdg5.

Patrick:
Copied Neo and updated with latest patch to boot volume. Problem: Can't unmount mhdg5 (non boot volume) because apparently files/processes are active on the volume. Can't see any in ps that are obvious. Suggestions?
Thanks. |

..and then drag the volume to the Trash immediately before any applications start trying to open files from it.
