Greetings kind friends,

I am posting this topic to enquire about the fine program of NeoOffice.
Please do not take my concerns to be one of criticism, but rather one of a curiosity which may be resolved.

My Apple PowerBook is somewhat aging as it is of the G4 1Ghz specification with 1GB of RAM and has installed within it MacOS X 10.4.11 and NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 3.

Upon the launching of the NeoOffice program we have commenced a timer of the duration to which the program becomes ready for use. This duration upon averaging of the several trials is of 30 seconds.

Theses seconds of delay have had the effect of an encumbrance upon the use of the NeoOffice program for maximum benefit.

I would be most receptive to your recommendations for enhancing the productivity of the launch duration.

With warm regards,
Oliver

Oliver,

See the Performance section of the Troubleshooting Tips page of the wiki for some things you could try to improve launch speed.

30 seconds seems a bit long to me, but I haven't really timed the launch. It is slower than most other apps. I'm working on a 1.42 GHz iBook G4, 1.5 GB RAM, and 10.4.11.

How much free space do you have on your hard drive? OSX likes to use a fair amount of virtual memory.

Oliver,

Also be aware that the first launch of NeoOffice after a system restart is necessarily longer than subsequent launches of NeoOffice during the same session. This is due to required fonts being loaded into java the first time the application is launched after a system restart. Once loaded, they remain loaded until system shutdown.

Therefore, you could separate your observations into sets of times to establish two averages; a first post-system restart launch time average and a subsequent relaunches of NeoOffice average.

These separate averages should be very different.

Of course, this all presupposes that you are quitting and re-launching NeoOffice during sessions between system restarts. If you only ever launch NeoOffice once and then leave it open in the background throughout a session between system restarts, you'll only ever be seeing and measuring "first post-system restart launch times", which are by necessity longer. This is a matter of personal user choices and will vary between individuals.

I hope this sheds light on the situation and invite others better versed in the mysteries of program launching to correct any of the above!

Trust this helps,

Actually, this is no longer true. We fixed that issue back in NeoOffice 2.0 Aqua Beta last year so that now, like other Mac OS X applications, fonts are not fully loaded into memory until you actually use them.

Much of the initial time for first start is due to the fact that NeoOffice is a very big application (about 10 times the size of code as Safari) and loading all of that code from disk into memory does take some time.
