I've written this page because my husband was complaining (ranting?) about Calc: he could not get a numbers column formatted as he wanted
en français
and
in English PPT.

A very clear article, thanks.
Just a couple of things in the English version:
1. There is an "ou" in the table under Scientific Format which should be an "or".
2. In the UK we use "." for decimals and "," for thousands - I don't know if this is the same in the rest of the English speaking world, but the European way round looks wrong in English!
I can do the edits if you think they are a good idea as I have a wiki login.

Thank you very much for pointing these carelessnesses out
Of course, it's a good remark. Feel free to fix these mistakes.
If you have trouble with the last table, which is a screenshot, I'll replace it easily.

Thanks from me, too. I caught some of the "ou" errors, but obviously not all of them. And I meant to ask about the , vs. . issue. In the US we use , for thousands and . for decimals, but I couldn't remember if that was true in England and other English speaking countries. I was in a hurry that day, so I forgot to ask here.

Andy,
I've uploaded a new screenshot. You'll have to empty the cache of your browser to see the new image.

I've replaced all the commas with periods and "ou" with "or".
Hope that I did not forget something. Thanks for checking.

I'm translating that article.
In the italian article, in paragraph "Thousands separator" I have added a part regarding the italian thousand separatr that is "˙" as in "1˙234".
With italian keyboard this is obtained typing shift+alt+f.
What about other international keyboards?

I didn't find it in the French keyboard. I had to use the Character Palette to insert it: Unicode 02D9 in the Punctuation section.

But, is actually this "˙" character the thousand separator in French?
It took a while for me to find it, but than I use the Mac OS X Keyboard Viewer.
I saw that in the french keyboard viewer there isn't this sing...

No. We use period or space as thousands separator. So this character is useless for us, at least for that purpose.

I've added a note about how to get the user-defined formats available in all new Calc documents (without having to redefine them), in French and in English (PPT). Seemed important to me.
