If trema is the two dots that the Germans call Umlaut, like ü, you can add this accent to any letter on a mac by typing first alt+u and then the letter you want the trema on.
You can display the keyboard viewer. It's very handy.
Open System Preferences… Click on the International icon, then on the Input menu tab.
Check the Keyboard Viewer box, and the keyboards you need: German for the Umlaut, French for many accented characters, etc.
Check Show input menu in menu bar.
In the menu bar you see a little flag which matches the language you are using. Click on this flag, change the language and click on the Show Keyboard Viewer.
You need only to click on the letters you want while pressing the opt, or shift key if necessary.
