However, according to OpenOffice.org, the database application ("Base"), wizards, and some other features of the program are not functional in versions prior to the forthcoming 2.4 release.
Doesn't this only apply to Leopard compatibility? That is not clear from the current context of the ‡‡ note.

We've always kept that page comparing the latest stable/released/suppSo I'd prefer to see the page compare 2.2.3 to OOo 2.3.x (or is 2.4.x out?) and Office 2008.
I'd say updating it to Office 2008 and adding that table is more relevant than the OOo comparisons at this point. We should leave the Office 2004 tables up there since there are people trying to determine whether they should update from 2004 to 2008, switch from 2004 to Neo, or stick with 2004.
I haven't played with 2008 too much yet, but on slower PPCs it is a dog, even when compared with Neo 2.2.3.

If so, it's not clear from the OOo website There's a joint page for 10.4/10.5, which mentions this in all red (with a little note about some things working on 10.5 at the end).

We've typically only compared one version (everyone's latest), and at this point the 2004 stuff has been replaced by the 2008 stuff (you can still find the 2004 stuff on the 2.2.2 page, of course).
That is a fair point, though. At the same time, I'd be worried about information overload; the page is a bit full as-is

OK, no worries. That's fair enough. Perhaps we should organize the page into something more like "tabs" where we can add more "vs." links at the top?
We should start investigating adding in one for iWork. We also may want to add one for AppleWorks for people updating machines.
I also think we should add one for the first Beta release as OOo 3.0 as "Beta" implies it's feature complete and, aside from bug fixing, will not have significant variation from final. There shouldn't be any feature variation from 3.0 (either Aqua or X11) from final.
However, according to OpenOffice.org, the database application ("Base"), wizards, and some other features of the program are not functional in versions prior to the forthcoming 2.4 release.
I know what this is. This is caused by a change Apple made in Java many months ago. What they did was change the corporate name from "Apple Computer Inc." to "Apple Inc." that Java prints out in its version description.
I noticed this and fixed the NeoOffice code within days after this change. However, OOo for some reason has taken until OOo 2.4 to fix their code. So, in short, our code works fine and this restriction only applies to OOo.

It's kind of implicit. Here's what it says:
Please note that the Java features of OpenOffice.org are only available from OpenOffice.org 2.4 (more specifically milestone m237) and later. This means that the Wizards, Base and some other things are unavailable in 2.3.1 or earlier. All other functionality of OpenOffice.org remains on Leopard.
