You can add any sort of shortcut in System Prefs, but the question is whether the shortcut will work, which is what Lorinda and jgd meant.

I do know that at whatever point that section was originally written, I was able to add To Word Right and To Word Left to my Window menu, given them the right shortcuts, and have them work.

That may or may not still be the case today.

Smokey

Jacqueline was not answering your question about the cursor navigating functions, she was asking my question about potential differences between operating systems for the section of the wiki on Using System Preferences to assign keyboard shortcuts in general.

Please try to remember that we are all volunteers here. It is begining to sound like you are ranting, and that is not conducive to getting the help you are asking for.

The core problem you are encountering is a bug in Apple's Java. See Bug 1763 for a more detailed discussion of the issue.

True, nothing prevents you from adding the command in System Preferences, and yes, the keyboard shortcuts appear in the menus. Yes, the menu will flash when you press the shortcut. But it will not execute. This is not a NeoOffice bug, it is a Java bug. It is apparently specific to certain versions of Java, as at one point the instructions in the wiki worked for some JREs.

I did forget you had rewritten a section of the wiki page under discussion. I will take a look at it the next time I have a chance to work on the article, and hopefully I will be able to incorporate your work.

Smokey:

Do you still have a 10.3.9 machine? If so, can you apply commands via System Preferences to menus other than the NeoOffice menu?

I finally got a system preferences applied shortcut to work in a menu other than NeoOffice under Java 1.4.2 in Tiger on a PPC.

I've done a little more work on the article. Given that the System Preferences trick still works on both 10.3.9 and 10.4.11 in some cases (i.e. JRE 1.4.2 on a PPC machine), I think I should still take a little time to amplify adding a command to a menu in that section. I'll try to do that in the next couple of days.

I looked at w_m0zart's wiki page. While it's very well done, the style and approach is quite different than most of our wiki pages, so I decided it was easier to just rework the existing text.

Hi Lorinda, thank you very much for your work. The page looks very good now. Dependency related issues are clearly explained as well, without hindering the essence.

I would suggest a minor improvement:
Quote:
The option key cannot be used as part of a keyboard shortcut in NeoOffice.

From an interpretation point of view, I had to read this very well to understand what was actually meant. I'd say: it's possible to use the option key as part of a keyboard shortcut. I would suggest however the following:
Quote:
From within the customize dialogue in NeoOffice, the option key cannot be assigned to any keyboard shortcut.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have changed that paragraph to make the option key issue clearer.

I'm still planning on making a few more changes tonight. I think I'll end up creating a new page on customizing menus as part of the process.
