hi!
i installed OOo yesterday on my mac and i'm having a problem with the right-to-left and left-to-right settings
i tried activating the buttons by going to view>toolbar>customize and checing the left to right buttons but they did not appear in the menu

I'm not an expert on RTL myself, but I seem to recall that you may need to have everything set up to be in a RTL language locale for it to work properly. What language are you trying to use?
Note also that the input methods for Asian languages are not functional in the OOo 1.1.2 english build. You'll need to get a special Asian build to support those languages.

Some questions, both for troubleshooting and to contribute more data points towards understanding the locale issue:
What is your system (OS) language set to? What OS version, and is it a "localized" one or English? Which RTL language are you trying to use in OOo? Which XServer are you using?

Although not checked in that dialogue, the RTL/LTR buttons have always appeared, by default, when I launched OOo 1.1.x (various testing builds and the 1.1.2 Final).
I have Arabic working properly (with some caveats that follow) on OOo 1.1.2 Final, Apple X11 1.0, OS X 10.3.4 English/USA. Cmd-space does not work to cycle through keyboard layouts, but once I switch to an Arabic one, it works (even switches to an appropriate font). The hamza dead-key in the Arabic-QWERTY layout also doesn't work. Also, the cmd- (or ctrl-) key shortcuts don't work while an Arabic keyboard is selected.
I just noticed (Ed, if you read this, is this perhaps a key?) that my X11 Input prefs are set to "Follow system keyboard layout," which claims to let the selected OS keyboard layout override any of the standard X11 keymaps....
