I do know how to create page numbers as I am a dedicated OpenOffice User for years and years. Since a few months, I am now working on the Mac with Neooffice.

A strange thing happens whenever I want to insert any pagenumber ...
If I Insert "Page Number", it inserts "Page numbers" as a word and in a greyish background into my document. If I enter "Page Count" it enters "statistics" with the greyish background. Similar stuff happens with all of the Insert fields.

I did update Neooffice (Version 2.2.3 Patch 6) and I also just updated my Mac OS X Version 10.5.3. I rebooted. I read the forum with the search function. I tried the help. I could not find any solution.

Please help me.

It sounds like Field Shadings and Field Names are turned on. Go to the View Menu; if these two items are checked, "choose" them to unselect them.

Does that fix it?

If not, try the following test:

Under the File menu, choose Print
Click the Preview button.

This will bring up a pdf version of your file. Does the pdf correctly show the page numbers?

NeoOffice inserts certain kinds of information in the form of a 'field'. (See the 'Insert' menu - item 'Fields'.) It can do this 'silently' so it just looks onscreen like any other text. Alternatively it can give the field a grey background (if 'Field Shadings' is turned on) so you can easily see that there is a field there. There is a further option to display a description of the type of field it is e.g. 'Date (fixed)' instead of the contents (if 'Field Names' is turned on). These options can be chosen via the 'View' menu.

Is that what you are asking?
