OK, I'm happy with the page now (or at least how it's set up).
It's terribly difficult to find useful information about Office 2008 (far more difficult than I recall when I did the looking for Office 2004 info), so anyone who has access to Office 2008, please fill in those ? cells (and verify any Y(?) or N(?) cells).
If there's anything that's unclear, or anything that's wrong, or anything that we should add, please say so

Smokey:
I just looked at the comparison page, and I'm wondering about OOo 3.0RC1 and spell-checking. A while back, someone using one of the OOo 3.0 betas on the Mac ran into the "Spell Checker not available" issue; it turned out to be a third party spell checker issue like the ones we ran into when Neo shifted to OS X's native spell checker. Our fix it instructions in the wiki solved their problem. I presumed this meant OOo 3.0 was using Mac OSX's spell check dictionaries, but I don't know for sure.
Lorinda
P.S. I also thought I'd seen somewhere that OOo 3.0 was to include access to the Mac Address Book.....but that memory's pretty fuzzy. |

I poked around and didn't see anything definitive from them (who am I kidding...when has OOo ever put out useful information?). I assume they don't use the Mac OS X Grammar Checker, though?

I thought I'd fixed that before taking the page live, but it turns out I hadn't...I was able to test that specifically.

I don't know either way. I haven't seen it mentioned over at the OpenOffice.org Community Forums, which is where I ran into the spell checking issue. I asked at the time if 3.0 used the native Mac dictionaries for spell checking, but I didn't get a direct answer.

Have a look at OpenOffice.org > Preferences > Language Settings > Writing Aids… not sure about the grammar checker though. |

I can confirm that OOo 3.0 RC1 uses the native Mac OS X spellchecker as I have already seen reports of the infamous Mac OS X "could not contact spellchecker" error.
I also check OOo 3.0 RC1 on my Mac OS X 10.5.4 machine and it does *not* do any grammar checking even though OOo 3.0 change the Tools :: Spelling menu to Spelling and Grammar. It seems that their Grammar part is not implemented yet.

Samwise's tip led me to poke through the bundle in search of installed dictionaries (extensions nowadays, rather than dictionaries themselves) and compare that list to the list shown in Language Settings and reach a similar conclusion.

Ed's infamous "I are a jelly donut." test phrase similarly did nothing in OOo in my testing.
I've updated the comparison to reflect those, plus added a few more things I'd managed to forget

I haven't seen this on the Neo/OOo comparison list (unless I've missed it) but to date, NeoOffice 2.2.5 will happily insert, display, print, & export .eps images (though they get rasterised on export to PDF, I think) whereas OOo v3RC1 (and DEV300_m31) is unable even to display them:
(removed image here, as it's just a waste of space )

Yep, it's there; perhaps the language is not clear enough?

Now that 3.0 final is out, we should do a (hopefully-)final update of the 2.2.5 vs 2008 vs 3.0 feature comparison page.
I don't really think much has changed (I haven't had time to snag the 3.0 build and won't for a few days, probably), but anyone who has time and OOo 3 (or Office 2008), please do take a look at the page and see if everything is correct and if you can fill in any of the "?" items. (If any item is not clear, post here and I'll clarify what I meant it to mean and see about making the item more clear on the page).

One of the things that I think is an important distinction between Neo and the commercial offerings is the frequency with which bug fixes are released to users. Patrick and Ed are two of the hardest-working and most responsive developers out there, and the NeoOffice tradition of releasing patches every week-to-two-weeks is probably the best in the business.
I've added this to the Feature Comparison chart, along with a guesstimate that OOo will keep releasing new bug-fix builds every three months, though I don't know if that's the case.

I've made a quick pass through the 3.0 Feature Comparison to bring it up-to-date for 3.0 and OOo 3.0.1. Please let me know if there's anything missing/incorrect (or update yourself, if you have a wiki account).

Daniel's post about the press kit reminded me about the Feature Comparison pages, too.
I think now that 3.0.2 is in Early Access, we should create a new feature comparison that does Neo 3.0.2 (EA), Office 2008, and OOo 3.1.1, with the goal of having it ready when 3.0.2 leaves Early Access.
To that end, I've copied the existing 3.0 page to https://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/NeoOffice_3.0.2_Feature_Comparison and have updated the version numbers to get us started. Patrick's added a lot of great new features in 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 that we'll need to add, plus we'll need to check out OOo 3.1.1.
Feel free to edit the page or post comments/questions/suggestions here.
