PostPosted: Thu Aug 07, 2008 5:59 am    Post subject: Crash when attempting to drag chart

iBook 1.33 GHz PowerPC 512MB RAM OS X 10.4.11 NO 2.2.4 Patch 3

I am getting what I think is a repeatable crash. I set up a spreadsheet with some data to try something out in a chart. There are three columns of data, and in some rows the second and third columns are blank. I choose insert chart and create a line diagram (B-spline with symbols). The lines in the chart are broken where there is no data in columns 2 and 3. When I attempt to resizing the chart by dragging a corner seems to be OK, but when I put the cursor in the centre of the chart and attempt to drag the whole chart, my iBook starts chuntering away and everything starts moving extremely slowly and erratically. I have not been able to launch Activity Monitor to see what is happening. The first time NO crashed it generated a crash log. The second time it crashed no log was generated, but I have saved the console log.

I rolled back from the test patch (4) which I have been using in case it was that which caused the problem (Patrick's optimisation of drawing routines to speed up Impress), but the problem is still there.

This is not a major issue for me since it is not something I plan to do much. But the crash process is extremely long drawn out - a 'put the kettle on' job. For that reason I am not keen to test it further.

Should I file this as a bug?

I've tried to reproduce this crash, but haven't succeeded yet. However I have noticed a slight cosmetic problem with the Chart Type dialogue.

Double Click on a chart
Right click and choose "Chart Type…"
In the dialogue that appear there are two scrolling areas.
The first shows the available chart types, the second the sub-types.

As there are only 8 2D charts and 5 3D ones this area should not have a scroll bar, or if it does the blue lozenge should fill the entire bar.

A minor inconvenience and one possibly caused by an inconsistency in the chart type dialogue - when using the Insert Chart wizard all 13 chart types are displayed together (with the correct size of scroll bar).

There is a good chance that you have system hacks on your machine. System hacks inject themselves into all applications and we have found many cases of system hacks causing NeoOffice in the past.

Can you open the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application, paste the following commands in the Terminal application window, press the Return key, and paste the output? This will tell us if you have any system hacks:

Code:
ls -l ~/Library/InputManagers
ls -l ~/Library/Application\ Support
ls -l /Library/InputManagers
ls -l /Library/Application\ Support

I may run this on my powerbook just to check...

Thanks and sorry I butted in here...

p.s. my powerbook looks quite similar, has a few different apps on it or not on the list. but the total is zero up on the top before the apps listing and the rwd (permissions) stuff. so I believe this is negative too. Yes? No?

thank you.

You have the following haxies on your machine:

Inquisitor
SIMBL
iCalFix

To disable these haxies, move the following folders (e.g to the Desktop) and reboot:

~/Library/Application Support/Inquisitor/
/Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor/
/Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/
/Library/InputManagers/iCalFix/

After moving these three folders and rebooting, does NeoOffice still crash?

These three folders are system hacks and may be affecting NeoOffice.

Remove them by double-clicking on the main volume icon on your desktop and, in the Finder window that opens, navigate into the /Library/InputManagers folder. In that folder, you should see the folders listed above, move them into the trash and reboot.

Let us know if that makes a difference,
thanks --fran

OK, I removed the three Input Manager folders and rebooted. It didn't crash this time but it did hang. Everything became very sluggish. I did manage to open Activity Monitor and it showed Neo was using up to 85% of CPU, 200+MB of real memory and 1.92 GB of virtual memory. I followed the instructions to sample the NO process which I have saved. Then I did Force Quit - although it was slow to process the instruction.

Where do I go from here?

Since we have eliminated system hacks, go ahead and file a bug in Bugzilla and attach the sample that you collected and we will look at it immediately.

Unfortunately, it is not something stupid. Instead, it is an OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 bug. For those who haven't seen the bug, I did find that this bug only occurs when you try to move it immediately after creating the chart. So, a workaround is to click outside of the chart and then click the chart to select it. Then any dragging will not hang NeoOffice.

Thank you for looking at this so quickly. I'm glad to see that it is at least a fixed OOo bug and that there is a straightforward work round to use until the next version of NO.
