OpenOffice.org is unresponsive. Apparently, some new unexpected release…

OS X-native OpenOffice finally ships

Edit: OK Patrick beat me to it…

According to posts on the OpenOffice.org Community Forums, there will never be an official PPC version of OOo for Mac, as none of the OOo developers (at least not those with Sun) have PPC machines. There are unofficial PPC builds on good-day.net.

Then don't fear, it seems like you'll get enough sleep time…

There's a 3.0 directory on this site, but there is nothing in it.

i downloaded it and gave it a solid five minute trial before posting this.

it isn't awful, it seems to function. the oo.o site itself is completely hammered, so say no to registration or the program will hang.

my biggest hope was improvement for doc file import. and it is there, which is cool. side by side page viewing is finally here too.

edit: this was post 1337

cuz, you know i am. i sp33kz with teh intrawebz sp33k

Hmmm indeed! I copied the url from an older post at the OOo Community forums. Maybe something has changed.... If I run across a reference to ppc builds, I'll post it here.

Could you post a link to these posts? I mentioned this on Macupdate and someone is (quite reasonably) asking for evidence Smile.

RC4 (which was released 11 days ago) might be nearly indentical to the final release, but these are unofficial builds…

And apparently there never will be "official" builds.

To test it I went to the OpenOffice.org main site. The usual site is down. in place they have a page with download links for all suported systems and processors. I downloaded the swedish locale for ppc and it says in the about box: OOO300m9 (Build: 9358).

It seems to be the final build, not a rc. I have not played with it. It starts and seems to work on a ppc g5.

cheers

The PowerPC downloads that you found are not built by Sun Microsystems but are built by an OpenOffice.org volunteer so it is unclear whether or not Sun Microsytems' OpenOffice.org engineers will fix any PowerPC bugs reported or if their forums will provide an equal level of support.

In contrast, my primary development machine is still PowerPC to ensure that NeoOffice's PowerPC releases receive equal development and support. So far Ed and I have already found several bugs in the OpenOffice.org 3.0 code on PowerPC that do not occur on Intel that we must fix before we release NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access next month.
