I was trying to import some text documents from Apple works to Open Office Word (Abiword). I was not directly able to import it, hence I saved the appleworks doc in .rtf format. Then I opened the .rtf document in Abiword and tried to save it as open office doc (.sxw). However instead of saving the file in .sxw format, Abiword saved it in .tmp format and I was unable to open it once it was saved. I tried it several times but it didn't work.

Am I not doing it the right way? Could anyone advice?

Caution: Abiword is not OpenOffice. You confusing two very different apps here. So it's difficult to answer your question. OpenOffice has several module. One of them is Writer which is launched by default if you launch OOo without giving it a file argument. Abiword is an other free word processor running under X11/OS X.
I you problem is really with OOo Writer, you question belong to this forum. If not, I doubt you could find help here.
From my experience saving file in rtf, opening it in OOo and saving back in OOo standard text format do works. If this is not the case, it might be because there are tricky contents in the file. Try with a simple AppleWorks file. Accented chars are often misinterpreted in the process.

Thanks for you reply Max. I'm sorry I was a little confused about Abiword - I was actually referring to the Open Office writer - so thankfully I'm at the right forum Smile

The documents I was trying to save did have some strange characters. I will try saving some plain text documents and see what happens. Hopefully it should work.

Please also report any error messages that you may receive when trying to save the file. I've been working with another longtime-OOo user that's had problems saving files (getting an "Error saving the document:File cannot be written" error). I'm wondering if you're hitting a similar save issue.

Thanks for your message, Ed. I did not get "file cannot be written" error. In my case, I was trying to save files which had some funny characters and some graphics, hence I was unable to save them. However I tried again with 'text only' documents and I could save them.
