In NeoOffice 2 one could easily install dictionnaries using the dicooo wizard living under "File" - "AutoPilot" - "Install new dictionaries...". I cannot find it back in NeoOffice 3. Has it been replaced by another function?

Yes there is a new function, NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code now uses the Extension Manager for dictionary installation.

To add spellchecking support for a language, launch NeoOffice and select the Tools :: Language :: More Dictionaries Online... menu.

Please let us know if you have any further questions,

Is there a way to install dictionaries/extensions system wide? Using the extension manager installs any extension in the user profile.

The only way to install an extension for all users (also known as a "shared" extension) is to run NeoOffice's bundled "unopkg.bin" Terminal command as the root user. You can use the following Terminal command syntax to add a shared extension:

cd /Applications/NeoOffice.app/Contents/MacOS
sudo ./unopkg.bin add --shared --verbose "/path/to/oxt/file" \
"-env:UserInstallation=file:/path/to/some/temporary/folder"

You can use the following Terminal command syntax to remove a shared extension:

Quote:
cd /Applications/NeoOffice.app/Contents/MacOS
sudo ./unopkg.bin remove --shared --verbose "filename-of-oxt-file" \
"-env:UserInstallation=file:/path/to/some/temporary/folder"

Note that if you reinstall NeoOffice, any shared extensions will need to be reinstalled. Also, be aware that not all extensions play nicely with NeoOffice when installed in shared mode so if you experience hanging or crashing after installing an extension in shared mode, first remove it and see if that stops the hanging or crashing. If removing the shared extension fixes the problem, your extension may only be usable as a user extension.

We should get Patrick's post somewhere in our new set of Dictionaries articles....

Or we should have a generic page about installing extensions in shared mode and just link to it in the Dictionaries articles.

Hmm.

I would not recommend encourage shared installation of extensions unless you really know what you are doing. After all, installing user extensions that are not thread safe as shared extensions can crash NeoOffice and installing a shared extension while a user has NeoOffice running can hopelessly corrupt the extensions database which will make NeoOffice crash at launch.
