Thursday 22 January 2009

When I updated to Early Access 2, I lost the python support for EuroOffice Dictionary. I restored it by deleting the NO3 profile and rebuilding it from the NO2 profile.

The cause, near as I could tell, was a conflict between the English and French dictionary extensions which I installed with Early Access 1 and those installed with EA2. The problem became visible when I tried to remove the French and English extensions which I had installed.

It sounds like NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code is favoring its own dictionaries over third-party ones. The OpenOffice.org code uses the first valid dictionary that it finds and does not "fall through" to other dictionaries.

You need to disable the three OpenOffice.org "Hunspell" dictionaries by selecting the Tools :: Options menu and in the dialog that appears, select the NeoOffice :: Language Settings :: Writing Aids item. In that item's panel, uncheck the "NeoOffice Mac OS X Spellchecker with Hunspell" item.

Does that make EuroOffice Dictionary operational again?

The EuroOffice Dictionary is a toolbar. I think you are referring to the EuroOffice Spellcheck which is a different extension. I have them both and will test. I kept the corrupt profile and will have time to test tomorrow.

The English extension which I used was the OOo official one extracted from a beta. Many of the early OOo releases lacked it. A real problem for those looking for English UK support.

I had a chance to test with the corrupt profile and even following the suggestion to turn off HunSpell, both EuroOffice dictionary and EuroOffice SpellCheck gave python errors.

The problem I think is that when I first migrated the profile, the English and French dictionaries I installed were migrated. The ones which come with EA2 were installed along side them, likely overwriting the files. Since the EA2 dictionaries are different from other OOo3 branches in that they are fixed and cannot be installed or removed. Nor can they be disable or disabled.

When I created the new profile, I removed my installed dictionaries before adding other extensions. This appears to have removed conflicts.

This is good to know. For those who are curious, any custom installed NeoOffice 2.2.x dictionaries will migrate to the following folder when you first run NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access or later:

~/Library/Preferences/NeoOffice-3.0/user/wordbook

To remove the custom dictionaries, quit NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access, move any files in the above folder to the Trash, and restart NeoOffice.
