That console log was from another user. I don't have any OpenOffice references.

The latest is that is was a short fix. Started NeoOffice this morning and the problem has returned.

Can you please provide us with a console log using pluby's instructions?:

pluby wrote:
If you open the /Applications/Utilites/Console application and open a new Calc document in NeoOffice, are any messages added in the Console window? If so, can you paste the messages in this forum topic?

With this console output we can see if there anything that appears to be an issue.

Did as instructed and there were no 'new' messages.

There was something from an hour ago. Not sure if it's relevant.

Thank you for the Console log. Unfortunately, there are no Spotlight messages that I can see which only means that Spotlight is silently hogging CPU. Sad

I did a quick Google search and I found that this Spotlight problem is apparently a not uncommon problem for many Mac OS X users. I found the following article that gives several possible reasons for Spotlight hogging CPU and they have workarounds for each that you can try:

http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20061109235901299

Scroll down to the "Performance boosters" section in the article and try each of their workarounds. Do any help?

FYI, this looks like you have a PPC version of DivX running on an Intel Mac or the other way around. I suggest reinstalling DivX to get the right version.

Thanks, I noticed that too. Useful tool Monitor;-)

I do not in any way want to sound flippant. I'm a huge fan of open source projects and would love to use NeoOffice. But can someone explain to me why I'm only getting this problem with NeoOffice Calc and not with Excel or Numbers or any other program for that matter?

I don't want to sound flippant either, but this is a simple issue: Apple's Spotlight is hogging all of the CPU and leaving none for NeoOffice. While other applications may not need much CPU, NeoOffice is a big application and does need a fair share.

This is not something we can fix as Spotlight is Apple's product, not ours. We only can provide ideas that you can try. So, to use NeoOffice on your machine, you are going to have to figure out why Spotlight takes so much CPU to index all of your files. Are processes on your machine indexing volumes that you are frequently adding or changing files on? Do you have huge volumes that have never been fully indexed?

OK I sense I've become an annoyance and will sign off this discussion.

In response to your last two questions, no and no.

FYI Activity Monitor shows extremely low CPU and Real Memory usage for Spotlight. In fact Activity Monitor itself outpaces Spotlight by a considerable degree.

Thanks for your help.

Well, that is a new development that you did not mention in your last post. Sorry to push the Spotlight issue so much, but the best way to troubleshoot rare problems like yours is to eliminate one potential cause at a time.

If Spotlight is no longer using excessive CPU, then the next thing to check is if something is consuming Mac OS X shared resources and never releasing those shared resources. To test this theory, can you reboot your machine? Does NeoOffice work OK after the reboot? If so, does NeoOffice eventually start not working again? If NeoOffice does not work immediately after a reboot, then we will have to explore different theories.

Rebooted. Same problem.

It was suggested when I first posted that I was experiencing the same problem as the original poster of this thread and that I should also try the Spotlight remedy.

I did this without checking the CPU usage so I have no idea if in fact it was ever 'excessive'. I'm doubting that it was. Thing is, the suggested remedy solves the problem - until I restart NeoOffice.

That is really strange that the turning Spotlight on and off again works but only until you restart NeoOffice.

I am hoping that NeoOffice is logging some error messages when this happens so can you do the following steps for us? Hopefully this might give us some data to come up with a theory as to what is going wrong:

1. Can you aunch the /Applications/Utilities/Console application and then restart NeoOffice? If the problem appears in NeoOffice, are there any new messages that get added to the Console application window anytime during or after you launch NeoOffice? If so, can you paste any messages that were added to the Console window in this forum topic?

2. Can you launch the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application, copy the following commands into the Terminal window, press the Return key, and paste any output into this forum topic? The output will tell us if you have any system hacks installed on your machine that might be conflicting with NeoOffice:

Code:
ls -l ~/Library/InputManagers
ls -l ~/Library/Application\ Support
ls -l /Library/InputManagers
ls -l /Library/Application\ Support
ls -l \
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0/Home/lib/ext

1. This is the Console message that came up when I started NeoOffice:

2. From Terminal:

Thank you for the information, but output from one "ls" command is missing. Can you please rerun the following command following the directions in pluby's last post and paste the output into this forum topic?:

Code:
ls -l ~/Library/InputManagers

In the meanwhile we will take a look at the information that you included.

Thank you for the last ls output. I do not see any system hacks so that is one potential problem eliminated.

We will investigate the console message:

NeoOffice error messages go through the grep command that Mac OS X is killing and further messages may be suppressed because of this.
