Good Day to all,
I just noticed recently that I cannot have impress direct a slideshow only to the external monitor (e.g. a projector) and have my notes display on my powerbook's display.
When dual monitors are setup on my PB, I set mirroring off, open the slideshow with OO and move OO's window to the projector and start the slideshow -- and it covers both screens.
iPhoto can run in slideshow mode on the second monitor only and have a spreadsheet on the main display no problem.

Using impress on dual displays is definitely a known problem and it isn't something that's immediately addressable in the X11 code. There are portions of the implementation that supposedly use xinerama, but I don't know how effective they are.
Whenever I'm using impress for presentations, I always use mirroring mode personally. I've never personally had the need for non-mirrored presos as usually i'm just reading slides off the internal display anyway. Note that you also need to put the X server in rooted display mode to get the menubar to vanish as well.
