The scrolling speed in Neooffice 2.2.5, patch 7, was slow, so I attempted to follow instructions on Internet fora to go to

Tools - Options - Neooffice - Java

And uncheck "Use a Java Runtime Environment."

I did so, and restarted NeoOffice. Upon restart, the scrolling issue was unchanged. I looked in the Java options, and the "Use a Java Runtime Environment " option was checked again!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled NeoO. All java has been updated on my computer. I have repaired permissions. Nothing I have done has allowed me to uncheck this option.

MacBook Pro, OSX 10.4.11, Intel Core Duo 2.1 Ghz, 2 Gb RAM.

Because of the way NeoOffice has ported the OpenOffice.org code, using a Java Runtime Environment is required. So it is probably not possible to deactivate JRE. Was the suggestion to uncheck it specific to NeoOffice, or was it concerning OpenOffice.org?

Even in OpenOffice.org, unchecking the JRE has significant consequences. Many (most? all?) wizards won't work, and the Base module won't function at all without JRE.

Lorinda is correct: you cannot disable Java with NeoOffice. Without Java, NeoOffice could not display any windows so I added code long ago to force that option to be enabled at startup even if you disabled it previously.

I understand. Then this begs the question: Why did my scrolling become so slow? Did the latest Java update cause it? If so, then of course I am stuck with it; but I have to tell you: This ruins NeoOffice for me. I simply do not want to use it in this condition.

I highly doubt Java has anything to do with your scrolling issue as the scrollbars are drawn by native Mac OS X code and when you scroll, you are largely spending most of the time in NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code.

Scrolling in a simple Writer document is not slow for me, so does this slow scrolling only occur in certain documents? If so, what kind of document is it (Writer, Calc, or Impress) and how big is it (number of pages, slides, or rows and columns)?

If scrolling is slow in all documents, then I recommend that you open the /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor application and see which applications other than NeoOffice are using more than 1% of CPU. If there are any such applications, does NeoOffice scrolling performance improve when you quit those other CPU-hogging applications?

And be sure to use the Activity Monitor window pick list to change the selection from the default "My Processes" to "All Processes" so you can view ALL processes running. Click on the CPU column to order the processes from smallest to largest to make it easier to see what is hogging the CPU.

Scrolling also depends heavily on the document. NeoOffice does reflows of your text all the time.

These reflows go from page break to page break. So 40 pages without a single page break can be slower, while 4 chapters of 10 pages can be faster.

Best wishes,
Oscar

Thanks for your diagnostic suggestions.

The document is a writer text document (a cover letter), of only 2 pages and 156 kb.

When I PageUp or PageDown, and the text moves at its glacial pace, there is a process called "WindowServer" that shoots up to 44% of CPU.

Part of the letter is my signature (black and white image). I tried deleting that and saving it as a new document. This appeared to help a bit. I then went to

Tools - Options - NeoOffice - Memory

and reduced the number of steps to 1. I made another change, saved the document, and tried the pageup and pagedown again. It is still the same.

So, I got some lorem ipsum text and tried a new document (84 kb). It scrolls pageup and pagedown at the same rate as the letter without the signature, and the WindowServer again shoots up to 46%.

Interestingly, if I just use the down-arrow key, I can get through the documents faster than if I use the pageup or pagedown keys.

The WindowServer is using that much CPU? I am wondering if you have any system hacks installed on your Mac OS X machine. Some system hacks have been known to slow NeoOffice way down so can you launch the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application, copy the following commands into the Terminal window, press the Return key, and paste the output into this forum topic?:

Code:
ls -l ~/Library/InputManagers
ls -l ~/Library/Application\ Support
ls -l /Library/InputManagers
ls -l /Library/Application\ Support

Thank you for the output. I do not see any system hacks anywhere in your output so I that probably is not the cause.

Still, it seems that something special is happening on your system when you press the Page Up or Page Down keys. So, the next possibility that I can think of is that maybe this unusual behavior is caused by a Mac OS X user preference.

To test this theory, can launch the System Preferences application, click on the Accounts icon, and create a new, non-administrator user? Then, logout of your current user and log into the new user. Does the same problem occur with a new "lorem ipsum" document?

1PasswdIM is actually a system hack (InputManager).

That is true, but the output only shows 1PasswdIM user preference files and since the actual 1PasswdIM binary is not in either InputManagers folder, it appears that it is no longer installed.

I will try tomorrow, but won't NeoOffice continue to use the same user preferences in the ~/library/neooffice2.2/user folder?

No. This is because "~" for your new user will be a different folder than "~" for your current user. Mac OS X creates separate Home folders for each user on your machine so that each user has their own unique user preference files in their ~/Library/Preferences folder.
