|
Summary: Tools::Extension Manager::Check for Updates... identifies a number of extensions with updates, but fails to update any of them, returning an error message instead.
See the attachments for specifics.
Of course I could (disable/uninstall/throw in trash? and then) manually download and install all these extensions, but that would defeat the purpose of Extension Manager.
Ideas? |

This is not a NeoOffice problem.
As your error dialog shows, the extension has specific that NeoOffice should downloads its updates from the following URL:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/files/726/7/ComposeSpecialCharacters.oxt
I have noticed that when you copy that URL into a web browser, it does not load so you need to complain to the authors of the extension as we do not manage or control their website in any way.

Specifically, the first URL redirects permanently to a second URL, and the second URL does not load. Both URLs are OOo servers, so OOo's IT staff has messed up something and will have to fix it.

Okay. That narrows down the problem (to OOo), but doesn't solve it, but that's not your fault. |

Since OpenOffice.org is a part of Oracle and Oracle is a very big company, I would assume that eventually their website will be back to normal so I would recommend trying again every 3 or 4 hours until the download works.

As a matter of fact, I first tried updating my extensions via Extension Manager a week ago, and have tried repeatedly (10x?) since then, all with the same result. That would suggest to me that it may not be Oracle but a whole bunch of extension authors.
Could the issue be extensions breaking between OOo (and hence NO) 2.x and 3.x? Perhaps the data in my existing extensions are pointing back to an old copy that only works with 2.x? Or to a URL that no longer exists? |

I doubt that is the issue because the URL that you saw in the dialog never gets loaded by Safari or Firefox. When webservers are functioning normally, they usually return an error page immediately if the URL does not exist on that server. I suspect that that server is overwhelmed (maybe because of last week's OpenOffice.org 3.2 release?) or broken.
Nevertheless, you can test if the problem if the old version of the extension has an update URL that no longer exists. First, you will need to search the web to find the latest version of the extension and if you can download the latest version, uninstall the old extension in the Extension Manager. and then install the new version of the extension.
If the update process does not result in any errors, your theory was correct. But if you get the same error, then OpenOffice.org's webserver is the cause.
