PostPosted: Tue Sep 28, 2004 11:58 am    Post subject: Non-Font Related Installation Hanging

Hi all,

I continue to have trouble installing OOo 1.1 on my machine. This is what I have checked/tried so far: 1) I have X11 already installed 2) I have tried doing a clean install by creating a new user (no joy) 3) My hang appears to be non-font related because I don't even get to the converting fonts message on the splashscreen. Instead, within a minute after authentication, the progress bar gets to about 70% completed (prior to font conversion I assume) and then hangs. I have let the computer run for as long as 30 minutes with no change in status. I am enclosing my system profile, console log, and sytem log. Please note that I received identical messages when I tried the install with the new user.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Landon

Unless you are really set on using OOo X11, you might want to try using NeoOffice/J. It is OOo 1.1.2 but does not use X11 and has a very simple installer.

You can download NeoOffice/J from here:

I assume the "70% progress bar" you're referring to is the one in this splash screen:

This is typically where the installer would quit for no reason as was supposed to be related to some Java corruption. That quitting was also the bug that installing as a new user was supposed to work around. Sad (Ironically, having installed Java 1.4.2 Update 2, I was able to complete that part of the install process as my main user for the first time in forever.)

Hanging is a new behavior for the installer at this particular stage of the install process!

Ed will certainly be interested in the Crash Log for the installer, if one was generated, but I'll second Patrick's post above: if you're not wedded to using X11, try NeoOffice/J instead Smile

Thank you both for the reply. This problem has been driving me nuts for quite a while. I was relecutant to switch to NeoOffice because I need a more stable office suite for everyday use. I'll see if I can rustle up an installer log as well.

The java updates shouldn't have an impact on the OOo X11 installer since it's tied to use the 1.3 VM which hasn't been updated in a coon's age.

People who have seen this problem in the past have found success by creating a brand new user account on the machine adn installing from that account. It may be font related. At that point in the installer it's also apparently creating ints internal structures, I think, which for the OOo installer are quite large (thousands of files). Try the fresh user account. Unfortunately, other then that, there haven't been other workarounds...and I've never been able to reproduce the problem on any of my test machines to try and narrow it down Sad

In the past it was difficult to figure out what it was doing on other people's machines since it wasn't a crash and there was no log. With the advent of CHUD or through using Sampler, though, it may be easier to get a trace.
