|
This is my first post, so forgive me if this is too simple a question, but I've been using Open Office for a few years now and I recently switched to Mac and just in the last couple of days decided to give NeoOffice a try. Is there a way to transfer over my old custom dictionary? I'm writing a dissertation and it contains a lot of specialised terminology which I'd like to not have to add manually again. Is there a way to transfer other custom stuff over, like keyboard shortcuts or templates? I ended up reconstructing all my templates, but it was kind of a pain to do manually. A way to automatically carry all that stuff over, or even just a streamlined process for doing it, would have made the switch a lot easier.
Thanks! |

Check out this thread for info on importing from OpenOffice standard.dic.

The stuff on the wiki page linked from that thread is really useful. In particular it led to a script which parses the Neo/OpenOffice user dictionary and pastes the result into the OS X user dictionary - all of which then got put up on the wiki.
I did a step-by-step guide yesterday for another user here's the relevant section: Quote: | Open TextEdit and copy the split_to_dict script from the NeoWiki into a new document. Choose Format::Make Plain Text, and then save the document without the .txt extension onto your desktop.
The next step will make changes to your OS X System user spelling dictionary, so you ought to make a copy of the original just in case. You will find it in [username]/Library/Spelling on my British English system it is called en_GB. Put the copy on your desktop or some other safe place.
Next copy the Example script from the NeoWiki and paste somewhere you can edit it e.g. TextEdit or a Sticky. Edit the script so that the filename at the end of the last line of the script is the name of the user dictionary you are wanting to alter. In my case I needed to replace 'en' with 'en_GB'
Next open Terminal and paste the edited script into the Terminal window and it will run, executing the split_to_dict script, copying the result into a file on your Desktop called neo-words and then pasting it into your OS user dictionary.
I then restarted my computer to ensure that the new user dictionary was recognised. The neo-words file can be deleted.
Does this work for you? |
I hope this helps. |

In templates, preferences, etc., take a look at This wiki article on recovering preference settings. For many of these, I think it would work to copy over the files from your previous OOo setup into the corresponding folders. At the very least it should work for templates.
I would make backup copies of your existing preferences before experimenting with this.
If it does work for you, please let us know, as we can add that information to the wiki page.

Yeah... I'm very new to Mac's OS and I'm not ready to do that kind of scripting yet. I think I'll just leave well enough alone for now and relearn all my specialised words one by one. If you ever turn that script into an add-on or a feature, I'd be happy to use it.
Thanks for all your suggestions, though! |

Orion:
My suggestion above about moving preferences may well work for your OOo dictionary. It's in the "wordbook" folder in the "user" folder of the profile/preferences folder.
