FYI. I think that I have fixed the hanging bug that you see. It is unrelated to the patch update checking but it is a bug nevertheless. Can you installed the following test patch and tell us if the hanging bug is fixed for you?:

Intel:
http://joe.neooffice.org/test/NeoOffice-3.0-Patch-5-Test-7-Intel.dmg

PowerPC:
http://joe.neooffice.org/test/NeoOffice-3.0-Patch-5-Test-7-PowerPC.dmg

Not sure which hanging bug you were referring to, but test-7 seems to work fine on my machine so far.

Oops. I just copied my text from the bug. The hanging bug was posted by another user in that bug.

With Patch 5 Test 7, NeoOffice no longer hangs.

However, the update check dialog that I see on every launch (with the -nodefault option) is definitely the NeoOffice/OpenOffice.org "Check for updates" dialog. I checked the extensions update dialog, and IMO it doesn't look very much like the dialog I see.

Attached: screen captures of the dialog I see and of the extensions update dialog.

OK. Can you attach the Jobs.xcu file?

Your Jobs.xcu indicates that you have installed two of Sun Microsystems' extensions in addition to the extensions that NeoOffice bundles. I suspect that NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code sees that there were updates found for these two extensions and that triggers the update check.

To test my theory, what happens when you select the Tools :: Extension Manager menu and disable all of the extensions from Sun Microsystems that you installed?

I ended up setting AutoCheckEnabled to false and now I no longer see the check for updates dialog on startup.

This only disables all update checking including patch checking and does not answer the question that I had: are any extensions that you manually installed triggering the update check?

OK, reverting my change, then uninstalling the extensions seemed to work. I no longer get an update check on startup.

When I had this issue, I only had the Sun Import PDF extension that wanted updating, and the problem went away once that extension was updated. I wonder if it's just the Sun extensions that cause this, or any that have available updates?

I also wonder if it's relevant that the Import PDF extension is one that also has a 'locked' earlier version 0.3.2 in NeoOffice that came pre-installed with the installed app?

I also wonder why the Extension Manager dialogue in NeoOffice is reached through a menu item called Package Manager? It's called Extension Manager in the OpenOffice menu (in 3.1, that is). Is this a leftover from OOo 3.0, or is it a leftover from an earlier version of NeoOffice? Or is this specific to the en_GB localisation?

</wondering>

Based on Samwise's Jobs.xcu, I suspect that any unlocked extension will trigger this once an extension update check has found that there is a newer version. Then it will keep triggering the update check dialog.

You will never see any update check for shared extensions that NeoOffice bundles. I specifically disabled this in starting in the NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access release.

In the default U.S. English installation, the menu is called Extension Manager so this is a mistake or lack of updating by OpenOffice.org's British English language pack volunteers.

For some reason, even the two Sun extensions were locked. I had to uninstall them using unopkg.

That explains why OOo 3.0.1 found an update for a (bundled, AFAIK) French dictionary that NeoOffice didn't.
