PostPosted: Thu Jul 31, 2003 4:01 am    Post subject: Could not launch OpenOfficeorg 1.0.3

Hi,

on my mac (dual Gig) I installed OOo 1.0.1, which works well, and recently OOo 1.0.3. But when I try to launch OOo 1.0.3 (with Start OpenOffice.org) I receive this message: "Could not launch OpenOfficeorg" (yes, only this info).

I modified the .sversionrc file (all in a line, as I read in another post):

[Versions]
OpenOffice.org 1.0.1=file:///Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.1
OpenOffice.org1.0.3=file:///Users/pierluigicapucci/Library/Preferences/OpenOffice.org1.0.3

But it doesn't work Crying or Very sad Please note that I'm not a power unix user! Wink

Is there any easy solutions?

Thank you for your attention

Pier Luigi

First...there needs to be a space between "OpenOffice.org" and "1.0.3" in the .sversionrc file. There needs to be a space in there for the version string to be properly recognized. Secondly, are you working with the 1.0.1 alphas or 1.0.3? If you have 1.0.3 on your system, you may want to get rid of the "OpenOffice.org 1.0.1" line out of the .sversionrc, particularly if you've removed it from the system.

If you do want to keep multiple versions of OpenOffice.org around, check out Start OOo's preferences and you'll be able to choose between your different installed versions Smile

Ok, thank you, I added the space:

[Versions]
OpenOffice.org 1.0.3=file:///Users/pierluigicapucci/Library/Preferences/OpenOffice.org1.0.3

but the message I get is the same: "Could not launch Open Office Org" Crying or Very sad

I wrote the two strings because in Start OOo's preferences I could choose which version to start (1.0.1 Final Beta, which works, or 1.0.3) that I have both installed on the mac. Removing OOo 1.0.1 string from .sversionrc I can't select OOo 1.0.1 in Start OOo's preferences (there is only 1.0.3).

My history is:

- Installed OOo 1.0.1 Final Beta on the mac. Working.
- Deleted OOo 1.0.1 Final Beta and installed OOo 1.0.1.3, with "Could not launch Open Office Org" window.
- Reinstalled OOo 1.0.1 Final Beta. Working.
- Installed OOo 1.0.3 (without deleting OOo 1.0.1 Final Beta), with "Could not launch Open Office Org" window again.

"Could not launch Open Office Org" seems a problem also for others 1.0.3 users I am in touch with on an italian macintosh newsgroup. Among them a user has two mac models with about the same configuration. In one OOo 1.0.3 works perfectly and in the other not ("Could not launch Open Office Org"). He can't understand why...

Anyway, thank you very much for your help! Very Happy

Can you try launching OpenOffice.org from a Terminal? That'll narrow down whether it's a problem with the installation or some other lockup is occurring. I don't believe there should be any conflicts with having two installs side-by-side, but I haven't tried it myself.

It seemed a TrueType font problem. So I took a look at OOo font directory and I noticed a font with zero length. I removed it and the program runs well.

Thank you again!

Can anyone think of an easy way to check the encoding of a font? We really should put out an installer that filters out the fonts we know it can't deal with. I don't think anything except regular roman character set fonts will work with OOo right now.

If you want access to Hebrew fonts, Asian fonts, etc, you'll need to use Neo/J. There are no plans to add support for these fonts to OOo 1.0.3 right now. We may revisit this at 1.1 X11.

PLC,

I was just about to give up on getting my installation of OpenOffice working without resorting to reinstalling OS X and X11. But then I saw your post including your crash log. Wow, that looked just like mine. And then you posted your find concerning a font of 0 bytes. So I looked in my OpenOffice fonts folder and found many truetype fonts with 0 length also. I moved those fonts into a temporary folder and tried once again to launch from the terminal. "Halaluia!!!" First that beautiful splash screen, and then a blank document window.

I just want to say thanks for posting on this forum and sharing your experiences.

I have to second mackeyka's thanks--I also was having this problem, and a zero-length font turned out to be the source of the trouble. Thanks!

I added a new entry to the Launching OOo troubleshooting FAQ specifically about the zero length fonts since it seems to be a recurring theme. Next time we release I'll be sure to add a bit to the installer to check for these explicitly and remove them instead of leaving them in the fonts folder Smile

How rude!

If you find the instructions so inadequate, then why aren't you helping to make them better?

You seem to be assuming that it is the developers' job to everything to your satisfaction. This would be true for commercial software that you buy. However, OpenOffice.org is developed, tested, and documented purely by volunteers. That means people who spend their nights and weekends (after putting full days at work) to put this software together. None of these volunteers ever get a single dime for their effort. Not only that, but this forum is funded out of donated time and money from the developers.

Not only can all you can do is complain, but you insult the very volunteers who make this software possible. Maybe not including instructions is a wise move as it discourages the people like yourself who only complain but don't contribute to the effort.

FWIW the installer was tested for over a month before the software was released, numerous bugs fixed, etc. and was tested on dozens of different installations. Obviously we can't test on the plethora of different system configurations, installed fonts, inkjet printers, network setups, user accounts, languages, and what have you.

There is also a rather extensive readme file and list of known issues included in the installer, everything that was known at the time. And these forums help augment it with keeping up to date information accessible about problems people have encountered with their configurations.

Just be thankful that folks have taken the time to share what they've learned in these forums. Perhaps next time instead of complaining you can be like our corageous testers and find these issues before they crop up in a release, and maybe even perhaps donate manpower to spend time focusing on a concise installer readme Wink

This is called open source software, and it's volunteer open source software, kind of like PBS but without the fund drive. It can only be as good as you help make it. A couple of people can't do it all alone.
