I'd like this too - and not just in Impress but in Writer etc. too.

I'm pretty sure I already voted for this a couple of years ago Smile.

I agree that it would be a worthwhile usability improvement, and it would be more Mac-like too. I've just looked at Pages and AppleWorks, and both pop up smaller font sizes as well as larger, starting at 9 point.

OK. Since nearly all of the the moderators voted for this feature almost immediately, it sounds like a good idea.

I will take a look at the OpenOffice.org code and see if this is something that I can implement for the next release. I have a feeling that code for drawing most of the dropdown list boxes is in one place so I am hoping that if I can implement the change, the change will appear in most of the list boxes throughout NeoOffice.

I should hope so. Then there would be a point to a shared codebase between all of the OOo applications..

I hope you find it quickly and easily Smile

Best wishes,
Oscar

Thanks Patrick - this is one of those tweaks that looks small but will make a very noticeable difference to the user experience. It'll mean one less mouse click + 2 less mouse moves each time to lower point size - which equals less RSI. Though in practice I tend to up-arrow with my other hand to save my mouse wrist.

I hope you can find a solution without too much trawling.

I think I found it and, maybe I am just lucky today, but it appears that the topmost entry in the list is set in once place. I changed the code to make the first entry 3 above the selected entry (or the the first entry if there are less than 3 entries above the selected entry).

The following screen snapshot shows how this small change looks like in the font size listbox. Is this the change that all of you are looking for?

Given the length of the list, you might change the 3 places to 4, but on the whole this would already be a lot better, for reasons so eloquently explained by padmavyuha.

Well done Smile

Felix Felicis Very Happy

Looks good to me. Only similar GUI element I could find in an Apple app (after searching for 3 minutes) is here:

http://www.apple.com/iwork/pages/

(second gallery, titled Fine-tune your document.)

Indeed, this will come in handy when attempting to quickly lower the font size.

Just curious: Will this change also act for other drop-down boxes (such as font selector)?

Best wishes,
Oscar

After Oscar's comment, I realized that the screenshot I mentioned is for a font dropdown, rather than font size dropdown. Embarassed

This change affects nearly all of the comboboxes and dropdown listboxes that are in NeoOffice. The reason I say "nearly all" is that I would not be surprised if there are a few places in NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code that don't use the code that I changed, but I have not found any yet.

BTW, this seems like a very low risk change so I will post a test patch in a few minutes so that you can test this particular change.

FYI. I have put the the combox/listbox feature in the folowing test patch (note that the font kerning and native highlighting changes are not in the test patch). Can anyone install the following test patch and tell us if they see any breakage in any comboxes or listeboxes?:

Intel:

PowerPC:

I installed test patch 4, and the change seems excellent so far. But I haven't gone through all of the UI. If I find any stragglers, I will let you know.

The only worry I had is when you might have a list that is smaller than 4 item, but from your posting with the screenshot, it looks like you've already caught that risk.
