PostPosted: Sun Jan 10, 2010 3:32 pm    Post subject: Apple Remote no longer works with NeoOffice

I recently tried to give a presentation using NeoOffice Impress, and I was dismayed to find that my Apple Remote no longer was capable of advancing slides with the Impress slideshow. I recall this remote worked fine with Impress a few months ago, and it still works fine with PowerPoint. I'm not sure if this is a bug in 3.0.1, or if I messed something up with my installation of NeoOffice. I tried re-installing NeoOffice and patch 3, but it didn't fix the problem.

BTW, I'm running the latest NeoOffice on Snow Leopard on a 2008 aluminum MacBook.

We have not made any changes to the Apple Remote support in NeoOffice 3.0.1 or any of its patches so I think the first step is to see if this is a bug that occurs only on Snow Leopard.

Can you try the following steps?:

1. Verify that Apple Remote works with other Snow Leopard applications by making the iTunes application the active application and then pressing each of the buttons on your Apple Remote. Do any buttons not work?

2. See if any error messages are being logged by Mac OS X by launching the /Applications/Utilities/Console application. Then make NeoOffice the active application, make an Impress document the active window, and then press press each of the buttons on your Apple Remote. Do any new messages get added in the Console application window? If so, can you post them in this forum topic?

Ignore my last post as I was able to reproduce this bug when I rebooted into Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. From the Console application log messages, it appears that Apple changed the format of the Apple Remote messages in Mac OS X 10.6 so that all button events look invalid.

I will starting work on a fix for this Snow Leopard bug and hopefully I will have a fix that you can test within the next few days. Please note that since NeoOffice 3.0.2 Early Access has been released, I will not be able to give you a fix for NeoOffice 3.0.1 and you will only be able to get the fix for NeoOffice 3.0.2 Early Access.

So, if you want to test any fix that I post in the next few days, you will need to install NeoOffice 3.0.2 Early Access from the Early Access Program download site.

FYI: I have opened bug 3580 to track this issue.

I think that I have fixed this bug by integrating the latest version of the Remote Control Wrapper code into NeoOffice. Can you install the following test patch and tell us if the fix works for you?:

Intel:
http://joe.neooffice.org/test/NeoOffice-3.0.2_Early_Access-Patch-0-Test-5-Intel.dmg
http://joe.neooffice.org/test/NeoOffice-2.2.6-Patch-3-Test-1-Intel.dmg

PowerPC:

Hi Patrick,

Wonderful, speedy work. My apologies for not getting back sooner, but I've been busy at work (using NeoOffice in my presentations!).

Unfortunately, I've misplaced my Apple Remote since my first post. Embarassed I'll test your fix as soon as I locate it and post again with the results.

Thanks again.

Is it code from these test patches that keeps logging stuff to the Console every time NeoOffice gains and loses focus?

Code:
1/19/10 1:52:44 PM soffice.bin[32318] Warning Application will become active - Using remote controls
1/19/10 1:52:44 PM soffice.bin[32318] Warning Application will become active - Using remote controls
1/19/10 1:52:47 PM soffice.bin[32318] Warning Application will resign active - Releasing remote controls

Yes. The latest version of the Remote Control Framework that we bundle with NeoOffice logs this message.

Seems sort of a silly decision for them to have their "release version" framework to do that, but OK Wink

FYI. I have included the fix in NeoOffice 3.0.2 which we released today. Members and subscribers of the current NeoOffice Early Access Program can download NeoOffice 3.0.2 from the NeoOffice Early Access Program download page.
