That is good news. I am glad that installing NeoOffice 3.1.1 fixed the problem.

If you have disabled any system hacks and NeoOffice is crashing then you need to follow the instructions in NeoWiki to obtain a crashlog (French language link) and attach it to your next post in this thread. If NeoOffice is hanging then obtain a sample instead. This will help Patrick to diagnose the problem.

James 3359

Thank you for the sample file. What I found is that the hanging is not occuring in any of NeoOffice's code. Instead, your sample file indicates that Apple's file dialog code is causing the hanging.

NeoOffice uses Apple's built-in file dialog and when you open Apple's file dialog, Apple's code handles the display of your files and folders. In your case, Apple's code appears to be hanging while gathering information about your files and files. We do not have access to Apple's file dialog code (they keep it secret) but we can guess what their code might be doing.

Before we try to guess what Apple's code is doing, I would recommend that you do some "disk repair" on your machine's hard disk. Doing a disk repair is a maintenance task that I do every month or so to clean up errors or small problems that have occurred on the hard disk.

Can you do a disk repair using the following steps?:

1. Reboot your machine and hold the Command-S keys when you reboot

2. When the screen changes to a black background with text only, type the following commands, press the Return key, and wait until your machine reboots itself after a few minutes:

Code:
fsck -fy ; reboot

Does the hanging stop after doing the above steps? If not, can you attach a new sample file so that we can see if the location of the hanging has changed?

Thank you for attaching a new sample file. But I am confused. The new sample file does not show any symptom of hanging.

Is it possible that the hanging only last a short time and by the time you had taken the sample, the file dialog was no longer hanging?

To test my theory, can you try the following steps:

1. Launch NeoOffice and select the File :: Open menu

2. Click on a folder in the dialog. Does the file dialog navigate into the folder and show the folder's files and subfolder?

3. If step 2 works, can you try navigating into a few other folders that you commonly store files in. Does the file dialog show each folder's files and subfolders?

4. Close the file dialog by pressing the red button in the file dialog's titlebar or by pressing the file dialog's Cancel button. Does the file dialog close and you can now edit your document?

If the hanging occurs during any of the above steps, can you tell us which step the hanging occurred in? Also, can you wait 60 seconds to see if the hanging stops? If it does not stop, then can you attach a new sample file?
