Hi all,

I have recently installed NeoOffice on my wife's computer and she really loves it.

However, she was used to Bean (http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html) where clicking on the Bean icon in the dock would create a new window (assuming there was no open windows) without having to issue a "New" command.

She is really really fond of this feature Smile So, is there a way to emulate this behavior in NeoOffice?

Thanks in advance.

FYI. I moved your original post to the New Features Request.

The good news is that I am pretty confident that this feature is feasible to implement since you are essentially asking for the Command-N key shortcut to be executed when you click on the NeoOffice Dock icon. The bad news is that I suspect that the engineering work to modify NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code to add this feature is not trivial.

Our donations only support one full-time software engineer (me) so we can only devote our limited engineering time to features that are likely to generate enough new donations to reimburse the NeoOffice project for the time spent implementing them.

In order for us to feel comfortable that we will recoup the engineering cost that is needed to implement this new feature from future donations, we need to see at a reasonable number of NeoOffice donors post that they also want this feature added to NeoOffice.

If we see at least 15 other NeoOffice donors post support for this new feature, then we will have a pretty good level of confidence that the new feature will generate the necessary donations and I will then start working on the new feature.

Is this a feature that any other NeoOffice donors want to see added to NeoOffice? If so, please let us know.

I wouldn't object to it, if there was a way to turn it off. I click on the Dock icon fairly often to switch applications, and I wouldn't want a new Writer document opening each time I do so. (Hmm...I see the request includes doing so only if there are no open windows. So maybe this isn't a big concern?)

I suppose that also begs the question of which type of document opens when clicking on the icon; some folks might want a spreadsheet document rather than a Writer document, for example.

fmu, is your wife aware that she can control-click or right-click on the NeoOffice dock icon and choose New? Not quite a quick as clicking on the icon, but quicker than switching to the app and choosing New.

That was my question, too. If Neo could somehow know what the last document type I had open was (or perhaps even key off of the "document type to open at startup" preferences--I have mine set to "none"), I don't think I'd object.

Patrick has done a lot of work over the past several releases to make Neo's launch/window-opening behaviors module-agnostic, so that it's easy to open/have Neo open any modules (or none) without all the hassle of OOo's backwards 1990s document-chooser-splash-screen, and Patrick's work has made my life easier, and I don't want to start having clicks on the Dock icon opening unwanted Writer documents or some document-type-chooser (the latter being what multiple-document-type applications, like AppleWorks, do to offer the standard Mac OS X behavior while supporting multiple document types).

She doesn't like control-click Sad (doesn't seem "natural" to her).
Anyway, this was just a question. If there is no obvious solution, then I'll simply tell her this is not possible.
