My spreadsheet documents no longer retain formatting such as spacing to cell contents. What has happened and how can I make it remember my settings?

I am not sure how to reproduce the problem that you are seeing. Can you attach sample spreadsheet and tell us which cells to look at to see this problem? Also, can select the Help :: About NeoOffice menu and tell us which NeoOffice version and patch you are using?

You can attach a sample document to your post using the steps in this forum post.

It's because I've resaved the file as an .xls file. How can I keep the file extension but retain control over the formatting?

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that you cannot save to Excel format and retain NeoOffice's cell spacing formatting. The reason is that the Excel file format does not support cell spacing. Cell spacing is a feature that exists only in NeoOffice's native .ods file format so when you export to Excel, .ods formatting that does not have an exact matching Excel formatting will be lost.

The good news is that there is a workaround. The Excel file format does support cell alignment settings. So, to emulate cell spacing in Excel select the Format :: Cells menu and, in the dialog that appears, click on the Alignment tab, and set the horizontal text alignment and indent settings. Unfortunately, this workaround will only be able to emulate cell spacing in the sides of the cell. To emulate cell spacing on the top and bottom, you will need to set the vertical alignment to "Middle" and then resize the row height of the cell.

Hope that helps.
