FYI. We have been finding that about 1% of our donors run into the following two types of problems that cause the download to fail:
Flaky internet connection
I am not sure whether this is due to by some ISPs quietly disconnecting big downloads or if it is due to flaky wireless connections. I know that I have stayed in enough motels to know that a weak wireless connection can make downloading even small files almost impossible.
Since flaky network connection problems are, IMHO, very likely to become more common, I have made the "download using cURL" section on our download page more prominent as shown in the "Updated cURL links" screen snapshot below. Not only will the link in that section work, but clicking on the Warning dialog will also send the donor to the cURL page.
Although this is a much rarer problem than flaky network connections, we have found that some web browser "add-ins" appear to selectively filter out some of our website's cookies. Unfortunately, these add-ins' clever attempts to filter out advertising or other content breaks our website's ability to serve downloads from an our small array of servers.
Since coding around the various cookie handling hacks that these add-ins use would be a time sink for us, we have instead added more checks in our web pages to verify that none of our cookies are missing after logging into our donor download page. If any cookies are missing, users will see the warning in the "Updated cookies disabled warning" screen snapshot below.
If you find any breakage in the existing download functionality, please let us know so that we can fix any bugs that we may have accidentally created while implementing these updates.
