Patrick, I hadn't seen that. Does that mean, in theory, that the same data could be accessed by HanDBase on the iPhone and NeoOffice Base on the desktop/laptop? (Tho' I don't know if I'm brave enough to try that!)

I'm a bit wary, Andy, of extending this conversation in an off topic direction about another product, but they do have two Mac-usable desktop versions, one which is native, but with somewhat restricted features, and a packaged version of the Windows desktop that runs on Mac using WINE emulation. It's not very obvious on the website, but see this post from the developer

It feels odd to a desktop dinosaur like me, but, I guess because they began on Palm, the handheld package feels like their primary product.

In theory, any database that has an ODBC driver can be accessed from Base Neooffice, OpenOffice, or LibreOffice. As amayze mentioned, HanDBase only has an ODBC driver for Windows.

Like JDBC drivers, the idea behind ODBC drivers is that applications can use ODBC drivers to connect to a variety of different database types. ODBC is actually the predecessor to JBDC. The key difference is that ODBC drivers are are native binaries and JBDC drivers are Java binaries. But both ODBC and JDBC drivers are essentially a translator that converrts standard SQL statements into whatever code or language a particular database uses.

Thank you. That's helpful, and the clarification about the Windows only ODBC driver. I'm very much a newbie as far as databases are concerned. I usually feel as if I'm wading in muddy water and feeling my way with my feet.
