Found the crash log (very stable OS never had to look before...)
I think the problem may be related to the way the JVM is reacting to the beta Apple X.app. It crashes while trying to draw the database access window not during the jdbc connection.
If someone wants to see the crash log I'll send attached to private mail.
This looks like a good reason to go out and buy Panther - please send paypal donations cause I don't have a spare 149 €
Cheers

If you have the crash log, please send it along to me (OPENSTEP at openoffice dot org) or, better yet, attach it to an issue in the OOo bug tracking system:
http://qa.openoffice.org
If it is an Apple X11 related issue, however, you're right that on 10.2 you're out of luck Your best bet would be to replace it with XDarwin/XFree86:

Is there an easy way of getting and installing xorg X11 in place of Apple X11?
make world is too much for me at my age (just read the sourceforge site)
No the real reason is I want to install this on a clients computer. One has Panther so i will test with Apple X11 on his machine - all the others are iMacs with 10.2.8...
Cheers

If you run the OOo installer on a 10.2 system with no X-server on it, it will give you the option of installing XDarwin and/or OroboOSX. They aren't the absolute latest versions. as the installer is ~ 6 months old now, but they have been tested with OOo on 10.2, and work OK. The OOo installer was designed to be stand-alone, so it could be distributed by CD, and used by anybody, without requiring lots of other items to be downloaded first.

To force it to go over the old X11 you should probably remove the Apple one first. The OOo installer looks for the existence of /usr/X11R6 and, if found, it doesn't attempt to install X11.
The directories that should be removed when switching from Apple X11 to XFree86 would be:
/usr/X11R6
/etc/X11
/Applications/X11.app (I think that's where the betas dropped X11...in the final release it's in /Applications/Utilities)

Also, be sure to save your beta Apple X11 .pkg in case you ever want to go back to using it. You can't get the 10.2 betas anymore from Apple. Bad for folks like me who are addicted to quartz-wm

I trashed everything that had soffice or openoffice in its name in Library and /User/tony/Library. Did clean install and it is working.
There was some stupid preference file somewhere in there that had me screwed.
Sorry for the bandwidth but now we know where the problem lies
And it is working...
