I don't think this is a crash. Instead, I think it is a deadlock. Most likely, Neo/J is blocked waiting for a lock to be unset so that it can continue.
The simplest way to debug this would be to attach to the frozen Neo/J process with the gdb debugger and then print a stack trace using the "bt" command with gdb.
Do you happen to have gdb or the Apple developer tools installed on your machine?
Patrick
Patrick,
I don't have the tools on this machine, but I'll try the patch and see if it works. I can install the tools from my Panther disks now, right? And Software Update will update them? Or do I need a fresh archive install of the whole OS?
In any case, thanks again for your prompt response to my post.
Installing the developer tools can be a pain so try the test patch first. If that doesn't change anything, then we can figure out how to debug it.
BTW, can you reboot your machine after installing the test patch just to make sure that the new libraries get loaded?
Patrick
Patrick,
Just a quicky response--first, the patch seems to be holding so far, 2nd, I've been rebooting since I saw the first post that mentioned it might have an effect. I'll try to keep the variables to a minimum! This means that the bug reports I've mentioned since the reboot info was posted have been post-reboot, if this makes sense. Sorry, it's late.
Just another brief update to let you know that the last patch you gave me seems to be holding. You're magic works as far as the deadlock is concerned, or so it seems! Stable as a rock on the iBookG4 for hours, with many docs open and screen savers galore. Thanks for being able to do it so quickly (and not needing me to reinstall the developer tools!). It's also working great on frankenmac, though it's been immune from the deadlock anyway.

Had a problem with the bloody spellchecker. Since NeoJ wasn't on the primary HD, I uninstalled it and reinstalled 1.1. Then applied the patch as per suggestion. Everything worked beautifully until I tried to save a document.
Get "Error loading BASIC of document" It then points to the old path to the previous installed location in the subsequent text of the error. I also get this when I try to do ANYTHING else in NeoJ. Help, please!
Removed and re-installed AGAIN! Still same problem.

First note that you can't install the Beta patch unless you've installed Beta. The patches do not upgrade between the Alpha and Beta versions. Between the two there's actually a whole "dot" upgrade for the underlying OOo from 1.1.2 in Alpha to 1.1.3 in Beta.
If things seem horked, the first thing to try is to erase the preferences that are in your ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ-1.1 directory. The "~" indicates your home directory. If you exit NeoJ, remove those preferences, and then restart those BASIC errors should go away.
If you're experiencing problems with the Alpha and its patches, unfortunately we won't be doing any further work on Alpha as we're all focused on Beta and Final.
