Is your X11 server running when you get these messages? I don't think that OOo itself puts up the please wait screen. You may want to check to make sure that your X11 environment is installed correctly and that Start OpenOffice.org is configured to launch the proper X server in its preferences (Start OpenOffice.org > Preferences).

You are using Start Openoffice.org ?

Click Start OpenOffice.org
It may ask for the version of OOo you want to start - choose the folder
"Please wait" flashes on the screen once or twice
You see X starting up
Then once X is started OOo will start.

The speed depends on your RAM and CPU. You may ahve to wait some time.

OO.o for X11 comes with OroborosX as the X11 environment, which works fine with 10.2.x. However, under Panther that doesn't seem to work properly.
Unless you really really WANT to run OO.o under X11 you'd be better off using NeoOffice/J.

Otherwise, get rid off OroborosX and run the Apple X11 instead.

You can view this topic for solutions to the problem:

Note that the XFree86 installations may also have problems on 10.3. For 10.3 machines, it's really best to use Apple X11. The "USA.keymapping" problem is an incompatibility between earlier versions of XFree86 as well as OroborOSX and 10.3. Your best bet is to get Apple X11 and reconfigure Start OpenOffice.org to use it. Apple X11 is either on your Panther CDs or can be fetched from:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/

If you really don't want to use Apple X11, you can try grabbing the latest XFree86s and OroborOSX versions (0.9 or higher) from their websites.
