i am installing openoffice on new machine with panther.

when trying to open files by clicking, openoffice will not open them. i get the following error message:

"applescript error
Finder got an error: Can´t get URL of alias: (name of location and file)".

then (sometimes) it attempts to proceed to open the file, and i get a new message that the application is closing down.

if i try to open a message from within openoffice using open, it works.

i have both java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 plugin settings.

i installed on a "clean" machine with no previous version of openoffice.

kleppar

Do you have FileVault turned on, and you are trying to open documents in your home folder?

If so, this is a known problem (found after the release of "Start OpenOffice.org" v1.0b9), now documented online, both on my web page and at :

http://ooodocs.sourceforge.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=5163#5163

If this is not your problem, you will need to provide more details in order for me to help you further.

Regards, Terry

Well the decision will have to be yours, but your choices at the moment are :

1) Turn off FileVault
2) Save/Open documents outside of your home folder
3) Open the documents directly from inside OpenOffice.org

I'm having a similar problem. However, the difference is I'm not trying to open a file in my home directory and FileVault is turned off. I'm trying to open a file on an nfs automount. For instance if the directory is /mnt/net/clients/10711/word.doc and I try to open it from the command line using the command (it's part of an automated script):

open /mnt/net/clients/10711/word.doc

With doc's set to open using Start OpenOffice. I get the following error:

Applescript Error
Finder got an error: Can't get URL of alias "clients:10711:word.doc". (-1728)

Thanks for the information.

I believe this is caused by an AppleScript Studio bug (the same basic problem as for FileVault). I don't think there is much I can do about it (sorry), but I will investigate a bit more.

Thanks. It's unfortunate that I had to request they get a copy of MS Office in the meantime. Smile This is the first time we've tested a mac on our intranet at work.
