(Vous remarquez, sans doute, que je ne suis pas une vraie francophone, mais j'essaie d'aider où je peux. Si j'ai mal compris votre question, j'espère que vous m'excuseriez.)
Here is an English translation of Pierre's question:
Hello,
Being an Open Office user for a few months, I deplored the impossibility of pasting screen images into my document and the slowness of the application. I was thus quite delighted to install NeoOffice 2.1 on my PowerMac G4 1,5 GHz.
Alas the application is unusable because the Bold and Italic settings do not function on the fonts, which are separated out in their various forms such as:
Arial
Arial Black
Arial Bold
Arial Bold Italic
Arial Italic
I put OpenOffice in the trash, thinking that perhaps that would solve the problem because I think I read on a forum that OpenOffice made a copy of all the fonts. I restarted my PowerBook several times, but this did not change the situation.
It is really disturbing particularly since I was thinking of passing on this software to a whole team {??I'm not sure I got this sentence right}
I opened Font Book several times and used the “resolve conflicts†command, but without impact on the behavior of NeoOffice. I am thus considering reinstalling OpenOffice despite its disadvantages. Would somebody have a solution?
Thank you in advance, Pierre
I welcomed him, told him that I couldn't answer his question, but that I did know I could make Arial bold or italic, and that fonts list out the way they do because of the nature of NeoOffice.
I'm guessing one of our true francophones will have the answer for him, but if someone else can offer the solution in English, I will do my best to translate it.
If someone can correct/improve upon either my answer or my translation, please feel free to do so. (With thanks to Samwise for correcting at least one very elementary error in another of my French posts!)
Arial Black doesn't have a Bold or Italic form (check with Cmd-T in TextEdit, or look in Font Book), but Arial does. When I click the "B" or "I" buttons, Arial becomes bold or italic for me....

J'ai aussi un PowerBook G4 et je n'ai pas de problèmes avec Arial. Un clic sur les boutons "G" ou "I", ou bien les raccourcis clavier habituels, Cmd-B et Cmd-I fonctionnent.
Essayez d'ouvrir l'application

English summary of above French posts:
Pierre has resolved all duplicates, but is still not able to make most (any?) fonts bold or italic. Specifically he mentions Arial and Times New Roman.
Both he and Jacqueline are wondering if this is related to the fact that he still has MSWord on his machine, which he retains to do some things he hasn't been able to do in NeoOffice.
Jacqueline cannot check this, as she does not have MSWord on her computer. (Nor do I)
Pierre's java version is java version "1.5.0_07".
I have not translated the English responses into French, as it appears he is able to read English. (based on his responses--I'll verify that in my next post).

Summary of Jacqueline's post:
Jacqueline has learned that the MS versions of Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana, and some others are different than the Tiger versions.
The second point in her post is already in English
She suggests moving the MS versions out of the way when using NeoOffice. (I'm not sure I got all the nuances of your last paragraph, Jacqueline, so I kept it pretty simple; hopefully I didn't get it wrong!)

It's right Lorinda, Thanks. I suggested to move the fonts Arial, Times New Roman and maybe others, but not to "trash" them. It seems quite easy to replace them in their folder. But I'm not sure that the problem will be fixed this way
