Okay . . . so presentation files are saved on a Win XP machine, burnt to a CD, inserted into a powerbook, and while attempting to open any of them they now (worked before, strange . . .) try to open as a document in open office for Mac OS X. (using OOo2). Also, when attempting to import into pages, there is a parsing error and the import fails.
Ideas?

1. Can you open the files on the WindowsXP machine? If not the disk is bad and cannot be read and needs to be burnt again. This does happen every once in a while. Also make sure the disk is closed and finalized.
2. Make sure that the files were saved as Office 97 version. OpenOffice is supposed to read Office 97/XP/2000/2003 files, but there are subtle changes from one version to the next. OpenOffice is only set to read Office 97 files. In other words, if you did not save them as Office 97, save them again in Office 97 format and redo the disk.
3. Try to copy the files to the Desktop from the CD. If the files cannot be copied, then the problem is with the drive and not OpenOffice.
4. I'm out of ideas at this point as I just ran a smoketest of this capability and it worked. However, if you don't mind, send me a private message and I'll try with the latest/greatest version of OpenOffice to duplicate your problems.
i read your post and am confused. are you trying to open them in OpenOffice.org for Mac? or are they using OpenOffice.org instead of some other program?
