This is beyond frustrating because the instructions that I'm following for numbering the chapters are from the documentation.

As I posted earlier in this topic, a likely cause of this is that you have found a bug in OpenOffice.org 2.2.1. All software has bugs and if there is one here, following the help documentation isn't going to fix the bug. Documentation only reflects how it was intended to work, not how it actually does work.

I'm aware of that, but this narrows down exactly what the bug is as it was working for a short while.

Is it worthwhile submitting this as a bug over at OpenOffice if it is no longer a bug in 2.3? Or only if it is reproduceable in 2.3? I'm not sure what the protocol is.

I would submit it in NeoOffice's Bugzilla first. We can then determine if we can reproduce it in OpenOffice.org 2.2.1. If so, then we'll tell you that it is an OOo bug. If we cannot reproduce it in OpenOffice.org 2.2.1, then it is our bug and we will try to fix it.

The key is to file a bug in Bugzilla with clear steps that we can use to reproduce the bug. That really speeds our troubleshooting process along.
