| New to Mac. I've searched and can't find an exsting thread. How do I link MS office extensions, .doc, .xls, .ppt, ect. to openoffice. If I insert a CD with those extensions I have to start openoffice to open the file. Is there a way to associate those file extensions with openoffice. Sorry if this is more of a Mac question than an openoffice one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Select one of the files (you'll have to repeat the process for each different extension), do Cmd-i (File: Get Info). In the resulting "window," click the triangle next to "Open with" (to expand it, if it's not expanded). In the drop-down menu, select NeoOffice/J and then the "Change All..." button. Select "Continue" from the resulting dialogue to complete the change.
Repeat for the other extensions.
Double-clicking on any .xls, etc. file should now open the file in NeoOffice/J by default.

Does anyone know of a way to set these (.doc, .rtf, etc) defaults for all users? We image all of our 500+ MacBooks and the settings don't seem to carry over for new users logging in. It's been a support issue.

The problem is that Apple claims these extensions as its own so getting Apple's extension handling service to give up control is no easy task.
Even forget this at least once a week and double-click on .doc and .rtf files and TextEdit opens it before I remember to drag the files to my NeoOffice Dock icon.

Since you're imaging these things, you *might* be able to hack the NeoOffice plist on the image to claim it's the default app for these types and have it stick on every new child of the image.
(If you were imaging a user account and each Mac would only ever have one user, you could just use the normal override method and ship the user's com.apple.launchservices.plist, but it sounds like you're imaging machines and users are created afterwards. Actually, I've never tried it, but maybe you could put that file in /Library/Preferences; I don't know if LaunchServices follows the standard domain rules of looking for items in the computer domain and then the user domain....)

Note, however, that if you do this that it will be your problem when some percentage of your users complain that NeoOffice "steals" their file associations.
You might think this isn't a big dea, but it was because of a flood of complaints that in our early days that we quickly learned that taking control of extensions that Apple claims ownership of is a rather nasty support issue.
