|
I just installed the new version of NeoOffice and have found that spell checking is broken. Anytime it tries to check a word (either as I type or if I tell it to check all spelling) I get an alert that states "Couldn't contace Spell Checker."
I am on a MacBook CoreDuo running 10.4.10. |

Have you done any customizations to Mac OS X that affect the built in spelling checker? Also, are you running with English as your preferred interface language or with a localization?

Also, do you get the same message in the TextEdit application?

I haven't changed anything that affects the dictionary, and I am using English as my language. I do not have any other problems regarding the dictionary. The only program that has given me the error message is NeoOffice. |

All of my settings are exactly like that. I went through the spell check guide, and I rebooted, still no dice. Look Like I'll be buying iWork '08. |

Do you see any messages in Console.log (in /Applications/Utilities/Console.app) when you try to spell-check (or when you get the message you reported in your first post?)

This is the message I get from the console:
Exception in thread "AWT-AppKit" JavaAWT: Assertion failure: Java exception thrown
JavaAWT: File src/macosx/native/apple/awt/util/AWTException.m; Line 40
JavaAWT: Assertion failure: _javaException

2007-08-27 22:17:04.431 soffice.bin[320] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: See Java exception object
This occurs upon clicking okay to the alert.
Still no luck, but thank you everyone for your help so far. |

I win! I found that I was getting the same message when opening .doc files in Pages '08 so I did a new search. I found this page where someone mentioning that spell catcher.service was the source of their problem. I went and moved this file to the desktop and renamed it. I then logged out and re-logged in. The problem is now solved in Pages '08 and NeoOffice. |

Thanks for the follow-up; fix details and link!
It will come in handy for other users should they run into the same issue!
I think this would be good for the Neowiki as well!
Thanks for posting! |

I second mickeyinlalaland's thanks. We really appreciate it when users post back with solutions. Doubtless someone else will experience the same problem, and now we know the solution.
I've added a link to this thread to the Activating Dictionaries and Configuring Spellcheck page.

I've turned Lorinda's link into a proper section. Thanks to all for the work on this.
