Great plug for Neo, even if the headline is a bit overly dramatic.

Great link / article, THANKS!

I had forgotten about the link in the article:
Quote:
@Mike: lol! For a (hopefully) interesting view into what has gone into producing NeoOffice, checkout this interview with the lead developer from a while back:

BTW, This article is a bit dated, and a lot has happened since it first aired, so we might do an update/expansion and run it again sometime soon.

It would be good reading for people asking questions like:
- What's involved in the NeoOffice effort
- How BIG is the project, and tasks to be done?
- Why can't I have feature "X"
- What make the Neo Developers think they have the skills to do this??
- Why can't if all be done ... differently.
- So, how rich are the developers getting off Neo?!?
- Some history. This is NOT a new project

I have no idea why commenters in the link in the OP are complaining that neo is slow... Anyone have any ideas why?

IMHO

1. perception - Java was slow so ALL Java IS slow.
1.1 Using Java to map to Mac graphic/Aqua user interface takes more resources to run.
1.2 If you run Neo on a Mac with less than 1 GB of memory, you will notice even more slowness.
1.3 If you run Neo without going through the NeoWiki Troubleshooting Tips - it's likely that you have some problems on your Mac ( Fonts and corruption, Haxies, to many background processes using resources, etc)

2. If they have used ANY version older than Neo 2.1, it WAS much slower.

3. The initial loading of NeoOffice, and Java, takes a noticeable number of seconds.
Not much that Neo can change there. It has gotten better.

4. The underlying structure of OOo has been tweaked and tuned to make it load, or seem to load, faster.
4.1 OOo code has been tweaked to run FASTer on Windows, and/or use functions to speed things up (like using XOR for windows graphics - IIRC, Windows graphics buffering, .... )

5. Face it, Mac users ARE spoiled.
Anything that does not run exactly as a Mac application is ... " heaped with ridicule".
( OK, there are programs on Mac that "I" do not use because they ... offend my Mac sensibilities Embarassed )

6. People complain that something so powerful and free - does NOT work the way "they" want it to. Mad
6.1 OK, It IS slow doing some things, but "I" can live with that. YMMV
Did I mention it's F R E E. I don't have to pay MS, Apple, or anyone else to manage my few documents, or read others. MS Office document compatible too!

7. Some people would complain about ANYTHING.
Does not matter if it is good, bad, or if the would NEVER use it anyway.

8. and a MAJOR reason - To many opinions ... without any real knowledge! Confused
(also known as Slash Dot Syndrome - SDS Rolling Eyes )

I figure that anything that gets a 80-90% approval rating is good for something.
Reviews on Amazon.com follow about the same rule-of-thumb.
Maybe it's not exactly what "I" need but it works well for many.
In Baseball if you get a hit 4 times out of 10 - you are batting 400 - which is a pretty good rating. Batting 500 is outstanding. How is something that can help with 80-90% + of your needs not be a good value?
