Woot! After some time the Link Grammar parser has been updated so it has a GPL compatible license:

Now I have no excuse for finishing up on my grand plans to build a grammar checker around it except for that nasty little thing called time...

oh, good grammar for jacob,
wait, it is better than word right? because some of that stuff is just hilarius.

and wouldn't that make us another notch above regular openoffice?

Haha! Well, I'm not sure how much better it is then Word's, but I don't think it'll be on the same level. While I know it can check and verify most English, it doesn't offer suggestions as to potential corrections. You can play with it a bit here:

It's the most promising open source tool that could be used to construct a grammar checker I've ever found since most all lexical analysis stuff is either closed source or in Prolog (nifty language, but a bit difficult to incorporate into a C++/Java mix).
