I've just deleted a post by user chocnuts from 119.95.174.141 (Philippines) on when is neo/j 1.1 beta going to be released? (from 2004!)

I have deleted a post from user verankey (IP 59.93.221.111 - India) on the "Movie and scanner support test patch now available" thread on NeoOffice Testing. It was a post about the best digital camera for taking pictures of cats' eyes!

And an OP from arkins (IP 115.118.112.194 - India) on the Vacation Notices forum advertising MBBs in the Ukraine.

I just deleted a very off-topic post from user 'gracyna' from IP 59.93.206.38.

It was about dancing songs in a topic on decorative borders in Word, which had not been posted to since last June.

Best wishes,
Oscar

I saw a very off-topic post in a two-year old thread by user racheliya rom IP 59.93.245.169 (BTW, the IP lookup option seems to be broken).

I actually answered before I realised it was spam Rolling Eyes.

Best wishes,
Oscar

The interesting thing was that the text use was a copy of a question posted on Yahoo Answers from a couple years ago...

Strange spam.

IP lookup is working fine. The reason you cannot find a matching name for that IP address is that there is no name registered for that IP address.

I see. It is just that none of the users I reported in the last month or so had a registered IP, so I was beginning to wonder.

Best wishes,
Oscar

If you find that there is no name for an IP address, another way to get an idea of where the poster is located is to execute the following Terminal command:

traceroute <IP>

The traceroute command will tell you all of the routers that a connection to the IP address passes through and usually the last few router names will indicate the rough location of the poster.

You can also use network-tools.com; I typically use the "network lookup" option, http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=network&host=59.93.245.169, which gives you a summary at the top ("59.93.245.169 is from India(IN) in region Southern and Eastern Asia") and then progressively drills down to the actual ISP.

(I actually have this set up as a bookmark shortcut in Camino, so I can just copy the IP, type "nwtools" in the location bar, paste the IP, and hit return.)

OK, we may have 2 new suspicious members.

First, stephenmorphey has three posts which, while possibly legitimate, revive semi-old threads.

And then, Water. His posts range from semi-suspicious:

They both seem to be taking a good deal of time crafting their posts, either to be relevant or to talk for a while to be typical spammers.

Two of Stephemmorphey's posts seem to be right on target, if a little late to the party. My "vote" would be to leave those posts and watch what happens over the next little bit.

Water's posts do strike me as somewhat odd; but I'm not sure that oddness itself is reason to ban them. I'm more concerned about the admission that they haven't used NeoOffice (are currently downloading), followed by an attempt to help solve an issue. That may need to be addressed, but I'm not sure about the best way to do it.
