Read-Only Text -or- Copying With Headers and Footers

Hi - I HAVE tried to research this in the forum and wasn't able to find an answer.

Here is the situation:

I have some VERY large documents in .Doc format that need to be broken up because the user's Jaws software (reader program for the blind) can't seem to deal with files over 800 pages.

* I tried copying the individual chapters into new documents - but the problem is the headers and footers (which contain the very important page numbers from the book) don't get transfered to the new document.

* I tried cutting out all the chapters from the documents except for one chapter at a time - but (apparently) somewhere in the document is read-only text and the 'cut' command is grayed out and unavailable. (I can cut out a few pages at a time but I don't know where the 'un-cuttable' text is located).

Note: When I start a sxw copy of the document I made from word I get a warning it contains macros. It doesn't seem to make any difference if I run them or not.

Note2: When I run the original Word version (or maybe it's when I convert from .doc to .sxw) I get a warning relating to Basic Code in the document.

Note3: This document was provided by a publisher under a law that says they must provide an accessible copy of class texts to blind students. This makes me suspect the publisher may have done something tricky to the document in an effort to protect it - somehow.

Anyone have suggestions on how I can break this document down into more managable pieces with the original headers and footers intact?

I am quite puzzled and have no suggestion for you yet. However, assuming it was created with MS Office, knowing which version of Office was used to produce the file could be helpful.

Maybe the people from who you got the file could give you more information about what they did to the file to protect it.

Also, when you copy an entire part of a file to another document, simpy using Paste isn't enough, You have to use Paste Special (in the Edit drop-down menu) to keep all attributes of the text. I don't know whether it will preserve headers & footers though ...

I was thinking that there has to be some way to restart page numbering at the beginning of a document or section but aside from styles haven't found a reliable way myself. I would think there must be some way to just restart the numbering and then splitting it up could retain the correct headers/footers since I seem to recall seeing it done for tables of contents with roman letter numbering...

Just a quick suggestion.

Maybe this is a case where you could set up a "Master Document" and make the " Chapters" separate files? I know that OpenOffice support Master Documents and sub-documents using Styles and such. I have not used this in NeoOffice yet.
Instructions for doing this can be found on the Internet.

Just a suggestion - I'll check out more details later.
