Greetings:

This is NOT a criticism because I know there must some give and take to make NeoOffice run without X11 and I just want to know what causes this (is it memory or splitting blinking cursor time or such?). I notice that animated GIFs seem to run just slightly more sluggishly in NeoO than MacOOo 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. I have Neo 1.2.1 but this has been true off all Neo versions.

Some of the issue is caused by bug 1368, but part of problem is that Java 1.4.x is just plain slower than X11 and Java 1.3.1 for scaling and drawing images.

An even more noticeable example of this slowness is seen when printing scaled images. Java's printing code seems to take forever for large images.

Thanks for the reply! Hopefully Apple will have its mind set on a faster version of Java one day.

Well, since Java affects the performance of animated GIFs as mentioned proir, would this equally affect other video-type plug ins?

Keep up the great work.

Right now we have no video plugins. While I haven't had time to explore this yet (and may not for some time...) in theory it should be possible to access QuickTime directly through QTJava. I'm not sure exactly how the flushing code in Java would affect it, but I suspect it might be a bit more optimized for video playback. I'm really not sure when I'll have time to look at it or whether there are any potential roadblocks with the QT integration, though Sad
